MOLIÈRE (J.-B. Poquelin, dit) SES ŒUVRES; avec Mémoires sur la Vie et les Ouvrages de Molière (par M. de SERRE), A SPLENDIDLY EXECUTED EDITION, IN LARGE TYPE; with large portrait engraved by Lépicié after Coypel's painting, and full page Engravings, Vignettes, and ornamental Initials from designs by BOUCHER, BLONDEL, and OPPENOR, 6 vols.

The plates by the celebrated Boucher-which are marked by his usual grace and freedom-have the additional merit of giving faithful representations of the Costume, Furniture, and Architecture of the period of Louis XV.

MOLIÈRE'S DRAMATIC WORKS; translated by H. VAN LAUN; with prefatory Memoir, introductory Notices, Appendices and Notes (finely printed in large type), WITH PORTRAIT AND 33 ORIGINAL ETCHINGS BY A. LALAUZE, India Proofs, 6 vols. superroyal 8vo. large paper, handsomely bound in calf extra, gilt edges, £14. 14s 1875-6 The same, finely bound in morocco extra, gilt edges, £18.

The same, VERY ELEGANTLY BOUND IN MOROCCO SUPER-EXTRA, with joints, silk linings and fly-leaves, the edges marbled and gilt, £24.

"Strikingly few Gallicisms are to be found in the work, which appears to be not only the best translation of Molière in existence but the best to be hoped. Those unfortunate enough to be unable to read Molière in the original will obtain from this version as correct an impression as can be hoped of the first of comic dramatists. As we have said, however, the value of the book does not end here. IT IS A DIRECT AND VALUABLE CONTRIBUTION TO EUROPEAN SCHOLARSHIP."--Athenæum.

"The Translator has endeavoured to give not only a faithful English version of the great Dramatist, but has also sought to preserve the spirit and brilliancy of the original. The Language and allusions of MOLIERE having become antiquated through the lapse of more than two centuries, such obscurities are elucidated in Notes, and a Critical and Historical Introduction is prefixed to each play. An interesting and characteristic feature in this edition is the printing as Appendices to the various dramatic pieces the passages which have been borrowed or adapted from Molière by our English Dramatists.

One of the Original Pictorial Penny-Post Envelopes designed by this great artist for public transmission, but withdrawn shortly after its introduction. (UNUSED.) Excessively Rare. 158

66

ANOTHER OF THESE ORIGINAL ENVELOPES for the sum of Two Pence. [This Twopenny Envelope is even more rare than the Penny one.] Price £1. 11s 6d The rarity of the above elaborate Official Envelope is well known. On the introduction of Postage Stamps, the officials feared their wholesale forgery; and with reference to this dread, The Daily News September 8, 1881, thus speaks: Possibly this unreasonable dread may have been at the bottom of the famed MULREADY envelopes, the beautiful but much too elaborate design of which afforded to the wit of 1840 such abundant opportunities for satire. They have now become very scarce; for the lampoons an! caricatures daunted the authorities, and the highly artistic but wholly inappropriate vehicle for busines communications was withdrawn. The scarcity is sufficiently explained by the fact that all the vast stock prepared for issue was destroyed at the time. A Machine was constructed expressly for the work of destruction, as related in Sir Rowland Hill's Memoirs."

These Envelopes have been known to fetch very high prices; and very recently one was sold by auction in Paris for the large sum of £20.

The specimens now offered above are known to be genuine by the slender strips of silk which are introduced into their manufacture.
