A REMARKABLE ILLUSTRATED COPY.

NOTITIA MONASTICA; OR AN ACCOUNT OF ALL THE ABBIES, PRIORIES, and Houses of Friers, formerly in England and Wales: and also of all the Colleges and Hospitals founded before 1540. By BISHOP TANNER. Last and Best Edition, with many Additions, by JAMES ÑASMITH, 1 vol. folio, with portrait by Vertue and plates of Arms:

Cambridge, 1787

EXPANDED INTO 18 HANDSOME VOLS. FOLIO, by the insertion of more than
NINETEEN HUNDRED VALUABLE ADDITIONAL ILLUSTRATIONS,
CONSISTING OF UPWARDS OF TWELVE HUNDRED AND FIFTY ENGRAVINGS,
ANCIENT AND MODERN, SOME OF WHICH ARE COLOURED,
AND NEARLY 730 ORIGINAL DRAWINGS,

MANY BEAUTIFULLY EXECUTED IN COLOURS.

THE WHOLE BOUND in 18 vols. FULL MOROCCO EXTRA, GILT EDGES, £135.

The present UNIQUE COPY of this most important work (which is also a very scarce one on account of the greater part of this--the best--edition having been destroyed by the fire at Nichols's printing office in March, 1808) owes its increased value to the life-long enthusiasm, the taste, and liberality of the late HUGH, ARCHDEACON OF SALOP, and his son, EDWARD PRYCE OWEN, M.A., both of whom were not only distinguished Archæologists, but also accomplished Artists, and who executed most of the Drawings. Some of these were made as far back as 1790; and thereby have an additional interest, as many of the Churches and other Edifices pourtrayed if not destroyed, have undergone more or less alteration.

The above-named Illustrations consist of Exterior and Interior Views of Cathedrals, Abbeys, Priories, Churches, Chapels, Hospitals, Colleges, Castles, interior Decorations, such as Monuments, Fonts, Ancient Paintings, etc.; also full-length Portraits of Members of the various Religious Orders, etc. In the collecting of them, not only Engravings published separately have been used, but valuable works have been denuded of their embellishments, e.g., the original edition of Dugdale's Monasticon, Rapin's England, Buck's Views, Helyot's Ordres Monastiques, Coney's Views, etc. The Original Drawings (upwards of 700 in number, and some of which are of a large size) are executed in Pencil, Pen and Ink, Sepia, or Colours, and are not only valuable as exhibiting many Edifices, of which probably no engravings previously existed, but as charming specimens of artistic skill and taste.

THE VOLUMES ARE ALSO ENRICHED BY MANY ADDITIONS IN MANUSCRIPT BY ARCHDEACON OWEN AND HIS SON.

*Such a copy must have charms for every enlightened lover of Antiquities, and more particularly for Members of the English Church, and it would therefore find an appropriate place in one of our great Libraries, Ecclesiastical or Secular.
