PERFECTIONS OF GOD.

HYMN 1. C. M. Scott.

[ocr errors]

Almighty....Gen. xvii. 1.

REAT God, thy penetrating eye
Pervades my inmost powers;

With awe profound my wond'ring soul
Falls prostrate, and adores.

2 To be encompass'd round with God;
The holy and the just;
Arm'd with Omnipotence to save,
Or crumble me to dust.

3 O, how tremendous is the thought!
Deep may it be imprest!
And may thy spirit firmly grave
This truth within my breast!

4 By thee observ'd...by thee upheld,
Let earth or hell oppose;

I'll press with dauntless courage on,
And dare the proudest foes.

5 Yes, for thy arm shall be my strength,
And thine Almighty pow'r
Shall well fulfil thy promises,

And victory secure.

6 Begirt with thee, my fearless soul
The gloomy vale shall tread ;
And thou wilt bind th'immortal crown
Of glory on my head.

Being of God....Psalm civ.

THE

HERE is a God, all nature speaks,
Thro' earth, and air, and seas, and skies;

See, from the clouds his glory breaks,
When the first beams of morning rise

:

2 The rising sun, serenely bright,
O'er the wide world's extended frame,
Inscribes, in characters of light,
His mighty Maker's glorious name.

3 The flow'ry tribes all blooming rise
Above the weak attempts of art;
The smallest worms, the meanest flies,
Speak sweet conviction to the heart.
4 Ye curious minds, who roam abroad,
And trace creation's wonders o'er,
Confess the footsteps of the God-
Bow down before him, and adore.

Condescension of God....1 Kings viii. 27.

E 'TERNAL pow'r, almighty God!

Who can approach thy throne?

Accessless light is thine abode,
To angel-eyes unknown.

2 Before the radience of thine eye,
The heav'ns no longer shine;
And all the glories of the sky
Are but the shade of thine,

3 Great God, and wilt thou condescend
To cast a look below?

To this vile world thy notice bend-
These seats of sin and woe?

[4 But O! to shew thy smiling face,
To bring thy glories near!
Amazing and transporting grace,
To dwell with mortals here!]

5 How strange! how awful is thy love!
With trembling we adore :
Not all th' exalted minds above
Its wonders can explore.

6 While golden harps and angel tongues
Resound immortal lays,
Great God, permit our humble songs
To rise, and mean thy praise.

Dominion and Power of God....Psalm xciii.

THE

HE Lord, the God of glory, reigns,
In robes of Majesty array'd;

His rule omnipotence sustains,

And guides the worlds his hands have made. 2 Ere rolling worlds began to move,

Or ere the heav'ns were stretch'd abroad,
Thy awful throne was fixt above:
From everlasting thou art God.
3 The swelling floods tumultuous rise....
Aloud the angry tempests roar
Lift their proud billows to the skies,
And foam and lash the trembling shore.
4 The Lord, the mighty God, on high,
Controuls the fiercely raging seas;
He speaks! and noise and tempest fly....
The waves sink down in gentle peace.
5 Thy sov'reign laws are ever sure-
Eternal holiness is thine;

And, Lord, thy people should be pure,
And in thy blest resemblance shine.

Eternity of God....Psalm xc. 1, 2.
HOU didst, O mighty God, exist
Ere time began its race-

THO

Before the ample elements
Fill'd up the void of space.

2 Before the pond'rous earthly globe
In fluid air was stay'd-
Before the ocean's mighty springs
Their liquid stores display'd.

[3 Ere thro' the gloom of ancient night
The streaks of light appear'd-
Before the high celestial arch

Or starry poles were rear'd.]
4 Ere men ador'd, or angels knew,
Or prais'd thy wond'rous name,
Thy bliss, ( sacred spring of life !)
And glory, were the same.

5 And when the pillars of the world,
With sudden ruin break,

And all this vast and goodly frame
Sinks in the mighty wreck :

6 When from her orb the moon shall start....
Th' astonish'd sun roll back;
While all the trembling starry lamps
Their ancient course forsake:

7 For ever permanent and fixt....
From agitation free-

Unchang'd in everlasting years,
Shall thy existence be.

6. L. M. Scott.

Exalted above all praise....Neh. ix. v.
WAKE, my soul, attune the lyre,
And raise to heav'n a noble song;
