THE word Idealism is generally understood to denote, that system of Philosophy, which teaches, that mankind is concerned only with Ideas; or, in other words, that, what our senses convey to us is not evidence of the existence of any external world, but only of our sensations.* A question of great interest, certainly, but one, that will not in these pages offer itself for consideration. For here, as no other word will do duty, I would wish to express by Idealism, that enthusiasm for Humanity, which has ever obtained, and still obtains co-extensively with the human race,-that love for the Form of Good, which has a natural birth in the soul of every man.t It is a common remark, that the history of the world is the past experience of the world. The practical value of the teachings of such experience, is proverbial, and for this reason the man, who aims at success in any line of life, cannot afford to be ignorant of history. How much more important then is it, that he should be acquainted with the history of Idealism, for the history of Idealism is the essence of all history! General history is to the history of Idealism, what the facial expression of a man is to the passion that works * Bishop Berkeley. VOL. III.-No. 13. + Plato's Republic, Book VII., 518. B |
