There will be found in the variety of papers contained in these volumes, some
which respect the attribute of expressiveness of Languages; and some, the
general rules which give them form and perfection; the histories of particular
languages and dialects, their remote or close resemblances, and their combi-
nations; their Root-words, their Grammars, Orthography and Syntax speci-
fically; their vocabularies and distinguishing idioms; with Treatises on par-
ticular inscriptions, names, and words, and dissertations on Alphabets.
The English Language, of all, is most largely treated on; its history is derived

from times before the Saxons' entry into Britain; their admissions of many
names and words from the Welsh, are exemplified, and some dialects of
English and Welsh are explained.

The Greek and Latin are largely considered, with discussions on their grammatical
and poetical Rules, and a Report upon, and examination of some ancient re-
mains lately recovered by the learned.

Several papers concern the class of Indo-European Languages.
There are particular Notices of the Slavonic Dialects, the Magyar, the Lapp and
Finn Tongues, and the Provincialisms of Holland and Friesland; also, some
on the structure of Sanskrit, and concerning the European Grammars and
Lexicons of Sanskrit; with papers on the Chinese Roots and the written
language of China.

Languages of New Zealand are included, and the Languages of many Indian
Tribes of North and South America, with some vocabularies, and these oc-
