PREFACE.

THE many commendations bestowed upon the previous books of the "Five-minute" series, and the consequent demand for them has prompted the preparing of this volume. "The limitation of your selections to five minutes in delivery is an admirable idea," writes Moses Merrill, Ph.D., the head master of "the home of declamation," the Boston Public Latin School, The editor of the "Harvard Shakespere," Rev. Henry N. Hudson, in reference to "Five-minute Declamations," first part, wrote: "I do not see how a better selection could well be made within the same compass." The commendations are many from persons eminently capable of giving an authoritative opinion, but an examination of this book will be conclusive to each one individually,

This volume is composed mainly of new selections from American orators, and will be found to be specimens of modern eloquence and ideas. That it may be welcomed as heartily and found as worthy as the previous volumes of the series is the wish of the editor.

WALTER K. FOBES.

18 BOYLSTON STREET, BOSTON, JANUARY, 1891.
