3 Let the Indian, let the Negro,
Let the rude barbarian see,
That divine and signal conquest
Once obtain❜d on Calvary;
Let redemption

Echo all the world around!

4 May the glorious day approaching,
Now begin its cheerful dawn!
Now the sun, the mountains touching,
Gilding now, the spacious lawn.

Happy nations!

Rise and celebrate the day!

5 Heavenly dove! stretch forth thy pinions,
Give to all the nations peace!
Jesus, may thy wide dominions
Hence for evermore increase!
Hallelujah!

Come, Lord Jesus, quickly come!

CHRIST.

211. L. M. Mr. John Fawcett.
The Song of Angels. Luke ii. 8-14.

HE heav'nly hosts descend to tell
The birth of our Immanuel;

Ye swains,' they cry, to you we bring
The tidings of the new-born King,'

2' Glory to God,' aloud they cry;
Glory to God, let men reply;
Let saints below, and saints above,
Give glory to the God of love.

3 The humble swains enraptur'd stand
To hear the sweet angelic band
Proclaim at our Redeemer's birth,
Glory to God, and peace on earth.'

4 Let every grateful bosom glow,
And praise in. lofty numbers flow;
In sweetest strains of music, sing
The honours of th' eterual King.
5 Let ardent praise, like incense, rise,
And fill the wide extended skies!

1

Since peace divine, through Christ descends, To bless the earth's remotest ends.

The Angel's Song at Christ's Birth.
Luke ii. 13, 14.

HIGH

IGH let us swell our tuneful notes,
And join th' angelic throng;

For angels no such love have known,
Tawake a cheerful song.

2 Good will to sinful men is shown,
And peace on earth is giv'n;
For lo, th' incarnate Saviour comes
With messages from heav'n.

3 Justice and grace, with sweet accord,
His rising beams adorn;

Let heav'n and earth in concert join,
Now such a child is born.

4 Glory to God in highest strains,
In highest worlds be paid;
His glory by our lips proclaim'd,
And by our lives display'd.

5 When shall we reach those blissful realms
Where Christ immortal reigns,
And learn of the celestial choir
Their own immortal strains?

213. L. M. Mr. R. Elliot.

Christ's Nativity.

1 the

Welcome, thou holy one of God;
Thanks to his name, the Saviour's born,
Born to redeem us by his blood.

2 He's come to do his Father's will,
He's come his people to redeem ;
And ev'ry heart with gladness fill,
That trusts in God, and waits for him.

3 Freely he left his Father's throne,
High seat of majesty above;

And heav'n and earth shall see and own
To men, the greatness of his love.

4 Happy the soul that can submit
To him that cometh from above,
To bow with Mary at his feet,

And taste the sweetness of his love.

5 Ye happy souls that know his name,
Who love and serve the living God;
Gladly to all the world proclaim
The Saviour, and his pard'sing blood.

214. C. M. Mr. Medley.
The Birth of Christ. Luke ii. 14.
1 MORTALS, awake, with angels join,

chant the solemn lay;
Joy, love, and gratitude combine
To hail th' auspicious day.

2 In heav'n the rapt'rous song began,
And sweet seraphic fire

Through all the shining legions ran,
And strung and tun'd the lyre.

3 Swift through the vast expanse it flew,
And loud the echo roll'd;

The theme, the song, the joy was new,
'Twas more than heaven could hold.

4 Down, through the portals of the sky,
Th' impetuous torrent ran;
And angels flew with eager joy
To bear the news to man.

5 Hark! the cherubic armies shout,
And glory leads the song;

Good will and peace are heard throughout
Th' barmonious heav'nly throng.

6 Hail, Prince of Life, for ever hail!
Redeemer-brother-frie!

Though life, and earth, and he should fail,
Thy praise shall never end.

215. L. M. Dr. Watts.

Christ's Incarnation.

Ps. xcvii. 6-8.

THE Lord is come; the heav'ns proclaim His birth: the nations learn his name;

An unknown star directs the road
Of eastern sages to their God.
2 All ye bright armies of the skies,
Go worship where the Saviour lies;
Angels and kings before him bow,
Those gods on high, and gods below.
3 Let idols totter to the ground,

And their own worshippers confound;
But Judah shout, but Žíon sing,
And earth confess her sov'reign King.

216. C. M. Dr. Doddridge.

The Redeemer's Mission. Luke iv. 18, 19.

1H The Saviour promis'd long!

TARK, the glad sound, the Saviour comes

Let ev'ry heart prepare a throne,
And ev'ry voice a song.

2 On him the Spirit largely pour'd,
Exerts its sacred fire:

Wisdom and might, and zeal and love,
His holy breast inspire.

3 He comes the pris'ners to release,
In Satan's bondage held,

The gates of brass before him burst,
The iron fetters yield.

4 He comes from thickest films of vice,
To clear the mental ray;

And on the eyes, opprest with night,
To pour celestial day.

5 He comes, the broken heart to bind,
The bleeding oul to cure;

And, with the treasures of his grace,
Tenrich the humble poor.

6 Our glad Hosannas, Prince of Peace!
Thy welcome shall proclaim;

And heav'n's eternal arches ring
With thy beloved name.

The Messiah's Coming and Kingdom
Psalm xevin. Second Pa

1 JOY to the world: the Lord is come:

Let earth receive her King:

Let ev'ry heart prepare him room,
And heav'n and nature sing.

Joy to the earth, the Saviour reigns;
Let men their songs employ:

While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains,
Repeat the sounding joy.

3 No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorus infest the ground;

He comes to make his Blessings flow,
Far as the curse is found.

4 He rules the world with truth and grace;
And makes the nations prove
The glories of his righteousness,
And wonders of his love.

Christ the Substance of the Levitical
Priesthood.

THE true Messiah now appears,
The types are all withdrawn;
So fly the shadows and the stars
Before the rising dawn.

No smoking sweets, nor bleeding lambs,
Nor kid, nor bullock slain,

Incense and spice of costly names,
Would all be burnt in vain.

Aaron must lay his robes away,

His mitre and his vest,

When God himself comes down to be

The off'ring and the priest.

He took our mortal flesh to show

The wonders of his love;

For us he paid his life below,

And prays for us above.

Father (he cries) forgive their sins,
For I myself have died;"

And then he shows his open'd veins,
And pleads his wounded side.
