PRAISE FOR SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS.

29. C. M. Dr. Watts.

Praise for the Gospel.

Ps. xcviii. First Part.

1710 our Almighty Maker, God,
honours be addrest!

His great salvation shines abroad,
And makes the nations blest.

2 He spake the word to Abr'am first;
His truth fulfils the grace;

The Gentiles make his name their trust,
And learn his righteousness.

3 Let the whole earth his love proclaim
With all her diff'rent tongues;
And spread the honours of his name
In melody and songs.

30. C. M. Dr. Watts.

Praise to the Redeemer.

1 PLWe wretched sinners lay,

LUNG'D in a gulph of dark despair

Without one cheerful beam of hope,
Or spark of glimm'ring day..

2 With pitying eyes the Prince of grace
Beheld our helpless grief;

He saw, and O amazing love!

He ran to our relief.

3 Down from the shining seats above
With joyful haste he fled,
Enter'd the grave in mortal flesh,
And dwelt among the dead.

4 He spoil'd the pow'rs of darkness thus,
And broke our iron chains:
Jesus has freed our captive souls
From everlasting pains:

5 O! for this love, let rocks and hills
Their lasting silence break,

And all harmonious human tongues
The Saviour's praises speak.

6 Angels! assist our mighty joys,
Strike all your harps of gold;

But when you raise your highest notes,
His love can ne'er be told.

31. C. M. Dr. Watts.

The Song of Moses and the Lamb. Rev. xv.
Wwe sound thy dreadful name:
WE sing the glories of thy love,

1

The Christian church unites the songs
Of Moses and the Lamb.

2 Great God, how wondrous are thy works.
Of vengeance and of grace!
Thou King of saints, Almighty Lord,
How just and true thy ways!

3 Who dares refuse to fear thy name,
Or worship at thy throne!

1

Thy judgments speak thine holiness
Through all the nations known.

32. C. M.

Praise to Jesus Christ.

OME let us all unite to praise
The Saviour of mankind

Our thankful hearts in solemn lays,

Be with our voices join'd.

2 But how shall dust his worth declare
When angels try in vain?

Their faces veil when they appear
Before the Son of Man.

3 Silent, O Lord! we would not be,
By love we are constrain'd,

To offer our best thanks to thee,
Our Saviour and our Friend!

4 Though feeble are our best essays,
Thy love will not despise

Our grateful songs of humble praise,
Our well-meant sacrifice.

5 Let every tongue thy goodness show,
And spread abroad thy fame;

Let every heart with praise o'erflow
And bless thy sacred name.

1

6 Worship and honour, thanks and love,
Be to our Jesus giv'n!

By men below-by hosts above,
By all in earth and heav'n!

33. C. M.

Praise to the Redeemer.

MY soul, let all thy nobler pow'rs

In harmony combine;

Awake and sing my Saviour's love,
So matchless, so divine!

2 Let all within me bless and praise
My high exalted King;

When he's the subject of the song,
Who can forbear to sing?

3 Holy and rev'rend is his name;
How glorious and how sweet!
All greatness and all goodness too
In our Redeemer meet.

4 The spotless Lamb resolves to fall
A bloody sacrifice,

To rescue rebels doom'd to death,
The Prince of Glory dies!

5 So, conq'ring sin, and death, and hell,
Arose, and left the grave;

And to the highest heav'n ascends,
Completely there to save.

6 Thence in due time he will return,
With a celestial train

Of saints and angels, and amidst
Those shining troops shall reign!

4. P. M. Mr. Rowland Hill's Collection.
Praise to God and Jesus Christ

YE

E servants of God, your master proclaim, And publish abroad his wonderful name: The name all-victorious of Jesus extol; His kingdom is glorious, and rules over all. 8 God ruleth on high, almighty to save, And still he is nigh, his presence we have: The great congregation his triumph will sing, Ascribing salvation to Jesus our King.

3 Salvation to God who sits on the throne;
Let all cry aloud, and honour the Son;
Our Jesus's praises all angels proclaim,
Fall down on their faces, and worship the Lamb.
4 Then let us adore, and give him his right,
All glory, and power, and wisdom, and might
All honour and blessing, with angels above,
And thanks never-ceasing for Jesus's love.

35. L. M. Dr. Stennett.

Praise to God for renewing Grace.
To
her tribute bring!
10 God, my Saviour, and my King,
Join me, ye saints, in songs of praise,
For ye have known and felt his grace.
Wretched and helpless once I lay,
Just breathing all my life away;
He saw me welt'ring in my blood,
And felt the pity of a God.

3 With speed he flew to my relief;
Bound up my wounds, and sooth'd my grief.
Pour'd joys divine into my heart,

And bade each anxious fear depart.
4 These proofs of love, my dearest Lord,
Deep in my breast I will record;

The life which I from thee receive,
To thee behold, I freely give!

5 My heart and tongue shall tune thy praise
Through the remainder of my days;
And when I join the pow'rs above,
My soul shall better sing thy love.

36. L. M. Dr. Doddridge. Gratitude and Praise for Redemption. Psalm xl. 16.

GOD of salvation, we adore

Thy saving love, thy saving pow'r;
And to the utmost stretch of thought,
Hail the redemption thou hast wrought!
2 We love the stroke that breaks our chain,
The sword by which our sins are slain:
And while abas'd in dust we bow,
We sing the grace that lays us low.

2 Through eternity he reigns
In unbounded realms of light;
Ile the universe sustains,
As an atom in his sight.
3 O let my transported soul
Ever on his glories gaze,
Ever yield to his control,
Ever sound his lofty praise!

44. L. M. Dr. Watts.

Divine Majesty. Psalm Ixvili. 32-35. 1 KINGDOMS and thrones to God belong; Crown him, ye nations, in your song: His wondrous names and poav'rs rehearse; His honcurs shall enrich your verse. 2 He shakes the heav'ns with loud alarms; How terrible is God in arms!

In Isr'el are his mercies known,
Isr'el is his peculiar throne.

3 Proclaim him King, pronounce him blest;
He's your defence, your joy, your rest;
When terrors rise and nations faint,
God is the strength of ev'ry saint.

45. L. M. Dr. Watts.

God sovereign and gracious.

1

Psalm cxii.

YE servants of th' almighty King,
In ev'ry age his praises sing:
Where'er the sun shall rise or set,
The nations shall his praise repeat.
2 Above the earth, beyond the sky,
Stands his high throne of majesty;
Nor time nor place his pow'r restrain,
Nor bound his universal reigu.
3 Which of the sons of Adam dare,
Or angels, with their God compare?
His glories how divinely bright,
Who dwells in uncreated tight!
4 Behold his love, he stoops to view
What saints above and angels do;
And condescends yet more to know
The mean affairs of men below.
