(Which we but tasted here below)

Spread heav'nly joys through all the place.

HEAVEN.

746. C. M. Dr. Watts.

Meditation of Heaven; or, The Joys of Furth. My thoughts surmount these lower skies,

Y

And look within the veil;

There springs of endless pleasure rise,
The waters never fail.

2 There I behold with sweet delight
The blessed Three in One;

And strong affections fix my sight
On God sexalted son,

3 His promise stands for ever firm;
His grace shall ne'er depart;
He binds my name upon his arm,
And seals it on his heart.

4 Light are the pains that nature brings;
How short our sorrows are!

When with eternal, future things,
The present we compare.

5 I would not be a stranger still
To that celestial place,

Where I for ever hope to dwel
Near my Redeemer's face.

747. C. M. Mr. Tyers.

2 Chron. vi. 18.

WILT THOU descend, eternal GoD,
To dwell with sinful men?

W

Lo! the high heavens, THY vast abode,
THY glory can't contain!

2 Much less this house which we have rear'd, To celebrate ТHY praise;

But O, THOU hast Thyself declared
To be a GoD of grace!

3 Wherever contrite hearts unite,
In praise and fervent prayer;

THOU wilt look down, and with delight,
Their grateful accents hear.

4 And grace, and joy, and holy peace,
Shall to each soul be given;

A pledge of pure perennial bliss,
Reserved for saints in heaven.
6 Come in thy saving power divine,
Jesus our Righteousness;

1

O come, and in this temple shine,
Hear, and forgive, and bless.

748. P. M. Mr. Tyers.

REAT God, avow this house thine own,

Thy ark of mercy rest:

Of old thou didst in Zion dwell,

O let each mount of Zion still
Be with thy presence blest.
2 Oft as in solemn fervent prayer,
And holy adoration here,

Thy saints together join.
Hear thou on thy eternal throne,
And send the varied blessings down,
In streams of love divine.

3 Here may the mourner find relief;
A balm for all his inward grief,

When doubts and fears annoy :

Beauty for ashes here bestow;
Garments of praise for heavy woe;
And peace and holy joy.

4 Here may the plants of righteousness,
Deep rooted in the Saviour's grace,
In due succession rise:

Bearing the fruits of faith divine,
And with increasing beauty shine,
Till meeten'd for the skies

5 Then in thy nobler courts above,
High seated on the mount of love,
Where blissful numbers roll,
Praises in loftier strains shall flow;
While pleasures, such as angels know,
Shall swell each raptured soul.

MISSIONARY HYMNS.

749. L. M. Mr. Tyers.

WHERE'ER the radiant orb of day,

Doth his effulgent beams display,
The Sun of Righteousness shall shine
With healing rays of love divine.
2 The promise of Jehovah stands,

That Christ shall have remotest lands;
And all the Islands of the sea,
His own inheritance shall be.
3 Foster'd beneath the Saviour's care,
The sons of Ham his grace shall share;
And India's sable tribes shall feel
The kindlings of celestial zeal.

4 Idols shall from their thrones be hurl'd, And darkness flee the moral world;

And Sharon's rose shall bud and bloom, Where deserts frown'd with awful gloom. 5 Kindreds of every tribe and tongue, To him shall raise the grateful song And Grace, triumphant Grace prevail, Till sun and moon and time shall fail.

750. P. M. Mr. Tyers.

ZION rise, thy light is beaming,

Glory waits thee from afar!

Lo! athwart the darkness gleaming, See the bright, the morning star. 'Tis the prelude.

To thy fulness drawing near.
2 Far o'er India's tribes henighted,
Mercy sheds a ray benign;

And the torch of truth up-lighted,
Spreads an influence all divine.
Great Redeemer!

Soon shall heathen lands be thine. 3 See o'er Afric's sterile mountains, Love her balmy dews distil,

And, ere long, her life-fraught fountains
Shall the thirsty deserts fill !
Haste, Messiah,
To accomplish all thy will.
4 Ethiopia's hand outstretching,
And the Islands of the sea;
Thy salvation, Lord, are waiting,
From their bondage to be free.
Gospel-heralds,
Go,-proclaim the Jubilee.

5 In thy chariot, all victorious.
Saviour of the world, ride forth;
Till thy conquests. large and glorious,
Shall encompass all the earth!

And thy Zion

"Fill with sons of heavenly birth."

751. 7's & 6's. Bishop Heber.

Reply to the call of the Heathen for help.

FROM

ROM Greenland's icy mountains,
From India's coral strand,

Where Afric's sunny fountains

Roll down their golden sand;

From many an ancient river,
From many a palmy plain,-
They call us to deliver

Their land from error's chain.

2 Shall we, whose souls are lighted
With wisdom from on high,
Shall we to men benighted
The lamp of light deny?
Salvation! O salvation!

The joyful sound proclaim,
Till each remotest nation

Has learnt Messiah's name.
9 Waft, waft, ye winds, his story,
And you, ye waters, roll,
Till, like a sea of glory,

1

It spreads from pole to pole;
Till o'er our ransom'd nature,
The Lamb for sinners slain,
Redeemer, King, Creator,
In bliss returns to reign.

752. L. M.

Send out thy Light and Truth.

Bast as the blessings he conveys,

RIGHT as the sun's meridian blaze.

Wide as his reign from pole to pole
And permanent as his control:-
2 So, Jesus, let thy kingdom come,
Then sin and hell's terrific gloom
Shall at his brightness flee away,
The dawn of an eternal day.

3 Then shall the heathen, fill'd with awe, Learn the blest knowledge of thy law; And antichrist, on every shore,

Fall from his thrones to rise no more.

4 Then shall the Jew and Gentile meet, In pure devotion at thy feet;

And earth shall yield thee as thy due,
Her fulness and her glory too.
