5 O that from Zion now might shine This heavenly light, this truth divine! Till the whole universe shall be

But one great temple, Lord, for thee.

COM

PRAYER AND PRAISE.

753. C. M. Mr. Tyers.

COME, Holy Spirit, from the throne
Of the eternal God!

O come, and make my heart Tay own,
Thy temple and abode.

2 Take of the things of Christ my Lord,
And show them unto me;
That I may comprehend Thy word,
And all its beauties see.
3 Thy quickening energy display,
Thou know'st my inward strife;
Kindle my darkness into day,
My deadness into life.

4 Subdue each vain impure desire,
Each tendency to sin;

And make me, by Thy hallow'd fire,
All glorious within.

5 Under Thy guidance may I live,
Thy constant aid implore;
With gratitude that aid receive,
Nor sin against Thee more.

COME

754. L. M. Mr. Tyers.

Thou who didst of old inspire
The prophets to reveal thy will;

O come, and with thy quickening fire,
Warm and instruct Thy servants still,
2 Our worship will be cold and vain,
Except Thy blessing we possess ;
Descend, immortal Dove, again,
And with thy presence fill the place.

3 Thou art the Comforter, the light

Of those who in Thy truth believe; In weakness Thou canst clothe with might, In sorrow consolations give.

4 Thy holy unction now impart,

To him who may thy truth declare;
And touch and solemnize each heart,
That all may worship in thy fear.

755. C. M. J. Montgomery.
What is prayer?

1 PRAYER is the soul's sincere desire,

Utter'd or unexpress'd;

The motion of a hidden fire,
That trembles in the breast.

2 Prayer is the burden of a sigh,
The falling of a tear;

The upward glancing of an eye,
When none but God is near.

3 Prayer is the simplest form of speech
That infant lips can try:

Prayer the sublimest strains, that reach
The Majesty on high.

4 Prayer is the Christian's vital breath,
The Christian's native air;

His watchword at the gates of death;
He enters heaven with prayer.

5 Prayer is the contrite sinner's voice,
Returning from his ways;

While angels in their songs rejoice,
And cry, "Behold he prays!"

6 The saints in prayer appear as one,
In word, and deed, and mind;
While with the Father, and the Son,
Sweet fellowship they find.

7 [Nor prayer is made on earth alone;
The Holy Spirit pleads,

And Jesus, on th' eternal throne,

For mourners intercedes.]

8 O Thou, by whom we come to God, The life, the truth, the way!

!

The path of prayer Thyself hast trod ! Lord, teach us how to pray!

756. C. M. Cowper.

Walking with God,

OH

Genesis v. 24.

H for a closer walk with God,
A calm and heavenly frame;
A light to shine upon the road

That leads me to the Lamb.
2 Where is the blessedness I knew
When first I saw the Lord ?
Where is the soul-refreshing view
Of Jesus and his word?

3 The dearest idol I have known,
Whate'er that Idol be,

Help me to tear it from thy throne,
And worship only thee.

4 So shall my walk be close with God,
Calm and serene my frame;

[ocr errors]

So purer light shall mark the road
That leads me to the Lamb.

757. L. M. Mr. S. Deacon.
A Hiding-place. Isaiah xxxii. 2.
[S Christ a Hiding-place? then I

Is for safety to his arms will fly:

I'll trust his wisdom, power, and grace,
Nor seck another Hiding-place.

2 Should floods of tribulation roll,
In dreadful torrents o'er my soul,
To overwhelm me in distress,
Jesus shall be my Hiding-place.

9 [Where'er I go, where'er I stand, Christ is the same, and still at hand:

In every dark and doubtful case,
I'll flee to him my Hiding-place.
4 In Christ my soul can smile at fear;
Old satan cannot reach me there:
Though he may show a brow of brass,
He cannot touch my Hiding-place.]
5 When to the verge of life I come,
And nature points me to a tomb:
Then i'll resign, retire, undress,
And sleep in Christ, my Hiding-place.
6 When the Redeemer leaves the skies,
And wakes my clay, and bids me rise:
Soon as my eyes behold his face,
I'll flee to him, my Hiding-place.

758. 7's. Mr. Tyers.
Dismission.

'MAY the save us bled and died; AY the grace of Christ our Lord,

In our hearts with sweet accord
Reign, and evermore abide.

2 And th' Almighty Father's love,
As famed Herman's richest dews;
Still descending from above,
Its bless'd influence diffuse.

S And in close communion,

May the Holy Spirit dwell,
With our souls in union;
Full redemption's sacred scal.
4 That in purity and peace,

We may serve our God below:
Faith, and hope, and iove increase
Till we up to glory go.

5 Then in spotless robcs of light,
Waving palms of victory i
We shall with: supreme delight,
Praise the ever-glorious Three.

THE Editor judged an alphabetical Index
unnecessary, in consequence of the attention
he has paid to the arrangement of the Hymns
under their respective classes, and of the care
taken in fixing such titles as are descriptive
of their real character. The reader, there-
fore, need only refer to such a class, and he
will find any particular Hymn with greater
ease than by a copious alphabetical Index.
