2 Here may the wretched sons of want
Exhaustless riches find;

Riches above what earth can grant,
And lasting as the mind.

3 Here the fair tree of knowledge grows,
And yields a free repast,
Sublimer sweets than nature knows,
Invite the longing taste.

4 Here, the Redeemer's welcome voice
Spreads heav'nly peace around;
And life and everlasting joys
Attend the blissful sound.

5 O may these heavenly pages be
Our ever dear delight!

And still new beauties may we see
And still increasing light!

6 Divine instructor, gracious Lord!
Be thou for ever near,

Teach us to love thy sacred word
And view our Saviour there!

166. C. M. Dr. Watts.

Instruction from Scripture. Psalm cxix.

Ver. 9.

1 HOW shall the young secure their hearts
And guard their lives from sin?
Thy word the choicest rules imparts,
To keep the conscience clean.

Ver. 130.

2 When once it enters to the mind,
It spreads such light abroad,
The meanest souls instruction find,
And raise their thoughts to God.
Ver. 105.

3 'Tis like the sun, a heav'nly light,
That guides us all the day:

And through the dangers of the night,
A lamp to lead our way.

counsels known:

'Tis here his richest mercy shines, And truth is drawn in fairest lines. 2 Here sinners of an humble frame May taste his grace, and learn his name; ''Tis writ in characters of blood, Severely just, immensely good." 3 Here Jesus, in ten thousand ways, His soul-attracting charms displays, Recounts his poverty and pains, And tells his love in melting strains. 4 Wisdom its dictates here imparts, To form our minds, to cheer our hearts; Its influence makes the sinner live, It bids the drooping saint revive. 5 Our raging passions it controls, And comfort yields to contrite' souls; It brings a better world in view, And guides us all our journey through. 6 May this blest volume ever lie Close to my heart and near my eye, Till life's last hour my soul engage, And be my chosen heritage!

HOW

OW precious is the book divine,
By inspiration given!

Bright as a lamp its doctrines shine,
To guide our souls to heaven.

2 It sweetly cheers our drooping hearts
In this dark vale of tears:

Life, light, and joy, it still imparts,
And quells our rising fears.

3 This lamp, through all the tedious night
Of life, shall guide our way,

Till we behold the clearer light
Of an eternal day!

ONSIDER all my sorrows, Lord!
And thy deliv'rance send;

My soul for thy salvation faints,
When will my troubles end?

Ver. 17.

Yet I have found 'tis good for me
To bear my father's rod;
Afflictions make ine learn thy law,
And live upon my God.

Ver. 50.

This is the comfort I enjoy,
When new distress begins!
I read thy word, I run thy way,
And hate my former sins.
Ver. 92.

Had not thy word been my delight,
When earthly joys were fled,

My soul, oppress'd with sorrow's weight,
Had sunk among the dead.

Ver. 75.

I know thy judgments, Lord, are right,
Though they may seem severe;
The sharpest suff'rings I endure
Flow from thy faithful care.
Ver. 67.

Before I knew thy chast'ning rod
My feet were apt to stray;
But now 1 learn to keep thy word,
Nor wander from thy way.

The Word of God is the Saint's Portion; or, the Excellency and Variety of Scripture. Psalm cxix. 111.

1LORD, I have made thy word my choice, My lasting heritage;

There shall my noblest pow'rs rejoice,
MV warmest thoughts engage.

I'll read the hist'ries of thy love,
And keep thy laws in sight,
While through the promises I rove
With ever fresh delight.

'Tis a broad land of wealth unknown,
Where springs of life arise;
Seeds of immortal bliss are sown,
And hidden glory lies.

The best relief that mourners have,
It makes our sorrows blest:
Our fairest hope beyond the grave,
And our eternal rest.

1 SALVATION! O the joyful sound!

What pleasure to our ears!

A sov'reig balm for ev'ry wound,
A cordial for our fears.
Buried in sorrow and in sin,
At hell's dark door we lay;
But we arise by grace divine,
To see a heav'nly day.
Salvation! let the echo fly
The spacious earth around,
While all the armies of the sky

Conspire to raise the sound."

Salvation! O thon bleeding Lamb!
To thee the praise beiongs;
Salvation shall inspire our hearts,
And dwell upon our tongues.

174. S. M. Dr. Doddridge.

Salvation by Grace. Eph. ii. 5.

RACE! 'tis a charming sound:
Harmonious to my ear;

Heav'n with the echo shall resound,
And God rejoice to hear.

2 Grace first contriv'd the way
To save rebellious man;

And all the steps that grace display,
Throughout the wondrous plan.

3 Grace taught my wand'ring feet
To tread the heav'nly road;
And new supplies I hourly meet,
While pressing home to God.
4 Grace all the work shall crown,
Through everlasting days;
It lays in heav'n the topmost stone,
And well deserves the praise.

175. C. M. Dr. Watts.

Salvation by Grace. Titus iii. 3-7.
ORD, we confess our num'rous faults,
How great our guilt has been!

Foolish and vain, were all our thoughts,
And all our lives were sin.

2 But, O my soul! for ever praise,
For ever love his name,

Who turns thy feet from dang❜rous ways
Of foily, sin, and shame.]

3 ['Tis not by works of righteousness,
Which our own hands have done;
But we are sav'd by sov'reign grace
Abounding through his Son.]

4 'Tis from the mercy of our God
That all our hopes begin;
Tis by the water and the blood,
Our souls are wash'd from sin.

5 'Tis through the purchase of his death,
Who hang upon the tree,

The spirit is sent down to breathe
On such dry bones as we.

Rais'd from the dead, we live anew;
And, justify'd by grace,

We shafi appear in glory too,
And see our Father's face.
