Nor will he put my soul to shame,
Nor let my hope be lost.

3 Firm as his throne his promise stands,
And he can well secure

What I've committed to his hands,
Till the decisive hour.

4 Then will he own my worthless name
Before his Father's face,
And in the New Jerusalem
Appoint my soul a place.

367. L. M. Dr. Watts.

Distrust of Creatures; or, Faith in God alone. Psalm Ixii. 5-12.

MY spirit looks to God alone,

My rock and refuge is his throne;

In all my fears, in all my straits,
My soul on his salvation waits.
Trust him, ye saints, in all your ways,
Pour out your hearts before his face;
When helpers fail, when foes invade,
God is our all-sufficient aid.

3 False are the men of high degree,
The baser sort are vanity:

Laid in the balance, both appear
Light as a puff of empty air.

4 Make not increasing gold your trust,
Nor set your hearts on glitt'ring dust;
Why will ye grasp the fleeting smoke,
And not believe what God has spoke?
5 Once has his awful voice declar'd,
Once and again my ears have heard,
"All power is his eternal due,

"He must be fear'd and trusted too." 6 For sov❜reign pow'r reigns not alone, Grace is a partner of the throne; Thy grace and justice, mighty Lord, Shall well divide our last reward.

Confidence in God, or looking beyond present Appearances. Hab. iii. 17, 18.

1ALet fear no more in me take place;

WAY my unbelieving fear!

My Saviour doth not yet appear,
He hides the brightness of his face;
But shall I therefore let him go,
And basely to the tempter yield
No, in the strength of Jesus, no!
I never will give up my shield.
2 Although the vine its fruit deny,
Although the olive yield no oil,
The with ring fig-tree droop and die,
The field elude the tiller's toil;
The empty stall no herd afford,
And perish all the bleating race;
Yet I will triumph in the Lord,
The God of my salvation praise.
3 Away, each unbelieving fear,

Let fear to cheering hope give place;
My Saviour will at length appear,
And show the brightness of his face:
Though now my prospects all be crost,
My blooming hopes cut off I see,
Still will I in my Saviour trust,
Whose boundless love can reach to me.
4 In hope, believing against hope,

His promis'd mercy will I claim, 2
His gracious word shall bear me up,
To see Salvation in his name:
Soon, my dear Saviour, bring it nigh!
My soul shall then outstrip the wind,
On wings of love mount up on high,
And leave the world and sin behind.

Hope in the Covenant. Heb. vi. 17-19.

OW oft have sin and Satan strove

1Hoofed Yey soul from thee my God! But everlasting is thy love,

And Jesus seals it with his blood.
2 The oath and promise of the Lord,
Join to confirm the wondrous grace;
Eternal pow'r performs the word,

And fills all heav'n with endless praise.
3 Amidst temptations sharp and long,
My soul to this dear refuge flies;
Hope is my anchor firm and strong;
While tempests blow and billows rise.

4 The gospel bears my spirits up;
A faithful and unchanging God
Lays the foundation for my hope,
In oaths, and promises, and blood.]
370. L. M. Dr. Watts.

Adhering to the Cross of Christ.
Hay my sout beneath thy love,
LIERE at thy cross, my dying Lord,
Beneath the droppings of thy blood,
Jesus! nor shall it e'er remove.
2 Not all that tyrants think or say,
With rage and lightning in their eyes,
Nor hell shall fright my heart away,
Should hell with all its legions rise.
3 Should worlds conspire to drive me thenc
Moveless and firm this heart should lie;
Resolv'd (for that's my last defence)
If I must perish, there to die.

4 But shall I, Lord, indulge my fear;
Am I not safe beneath thy shade?
Thy vengeance will not strike me here,
Nor Satan dares my soul invade.
5 Yes, I'm secure beneath thy blood,
And all my foes shall lose their aim:
Hosanna to my dying Lord!

And my best honours to his name

And in thy good pleasure my soul shall rejoice. 2 The world resign, and all it can give, Lord, if I am thine, securely I live,

If thou art my Saviour, in thee I have all: I'm blest in thy favour, whate'er me befall. 3 In all my distress thy niercy is near,

My griefs to redress, and vanquish my fear; For thou art omniscient, each danger to spy, And God all-sufficient my needs to supply. 4 When earth can afford no comfort or ease, I find in thy word celestial peace:

If all the creation upon me should frown, Thy glorious salvation iny wishes will crown.

The aged Saint's Reflection and Hope.
Psalm lxxi. 5-9.

1 MY God, my everlasting hope,

I live upon thy truth;

Thine hands have held any childhood up,
And strengthen'd all my youth.

2 My flesh was fashion'd by thy pow'r,
With all these limbs of mine;

And from my mother's painful hour
I've been entirely thine.

3 Still has my life new wonders seen
Repeated ev'ry year;

Behold my days that yet remain,

I trust them to thy care.

4 Cast me not off when strength declines,
When hoary hairs arise;

And round me let thy glory shine,
Whene'er thy servant dies.

5 Then in the hist'ry of my age,
When men review my days,
They'll read thy love in ev'ry page,
In ev'ry line thy praise.

Confidence in the Power and Faithfulness of God. 1 Cor. x. 13.

1N And make Jehovah's arm their song: His shield is spread o'er every saint, And thus supported, who shall faint? 2 What though the hosts of hell engage With mingled cruelty and rage?

Tow let the feeble all be strong,

A faithful God restrains their hands,
And chains them down in iron bands.
3 Bound by his word, he will display
A strength proportion'd to our day;
And, when united trials meet,
Will show a path of safe retreat.
4 Thus far we prove that promise good,
Which Jesus ratify'd with blood
Still is he gracious, wise, and just,
And still in him let Israel trust.

LOVE.

374. L. M. Dr. Watts. Charity and Uncharitableness. Rom. xiv. 17, 19. 1 Cor. x. 32.

NOT

diff'rent food, nor diff'rent dress,
Compose the kingdom of our Lord;
But peace, and joy, and righteousness,
Faith and obedience to his word.
2 When weaker christians we despise,
We do the gospel mighty wrong:
For God, the gracious and the wise,
Receives the feeble with the strong.
3 Let pride and wrath be banish'd hence,
Meekness and love our souls pursue;
Nor shall our practice give offence
To saints, the Gentile, or the Jew.

The Love of God shed abroad in the Heart. Eph. iii. 16, &c.

COME

dearest Lord, descend and dwell By faith and love in ev'ry breast; Then shall we know, and taste, and feel, The joys that cannot be express'd.

2 Come, fill our hearts with inward strength, Make our enlarged souls possess,

And learn the height, and breadth, and length Of thine immeasurable grace.

3 Now to the God whose pow'r can do

More than our thoughts and wishes know, Be everlasting honours done

By all the Church, through Christ his Son.

376. C. M. Dr. Watts.

Love to God superior to Knowledge, Faith, and Hope.

HWhere love inspires the breast:
APPY the heart where graces reign,

Love is the brightest of the train,
And strengthens all the rest.

2 Knowledge, alas! 'tis all in vain,
And all in vain our fear;

Our stubborn sins will fight and reign,
If love be absent there.
