Ready to sink beneath the wave;
A lively emblem of the grave.

2 Let neither shame, nor fear, nor pride,
Divert our steady feet aside;

'Tis thy appointment, in thy name We venture down into the stream. 3 Come, then descend into the flood; 'Tis not a lake of fire nor blood: Tis what your Saviour realiz'd, Then follow him, and be baptiz'd.

(Pause while the Ordinance is administered.} 4 Behold, ye multitude, behold!

This was the way in days of old: The same the Law, the Lord the same; Then where's the sin, or where's the shame? 5 Lord of the universe! look down, And make thy great salvation known: Teach ev'ry sinner to obey,

And follow Jesus his own way.

521. C. M. Dr. Doddridge.

A practical Improvement of Baptism.

Col. iii. 1.

ATTEND, ye children of our God;
Ye heirs of glory, hear;

For accents so divine as these

Might charm the dullest ear.

2 Baptiz'd into your Saviour's death,
Your souls to sin must die;

With Christ, your Lord, ye live anew,
With Christ ascend on high.

3 There by his Father's side he sits,
Enthron'd divinely fair;

Yet owns himself your brother still,
And your forerunner there.
4 Rise from these earthly trifles, rise
On wings of faith and love;
Above your choicest treasure lies,
And be your hearts above.

5 But earth and sin would drag us down
When we attempt to fly;

Lord, send thy strong attractive pow'r
To raise and fix us high.

Not ashamed of Christ.

JESUS! and shall it ever be,

JE

A mortal man asham'd of thee! Asham'd of thee, whom angels praise, Whose glories shine through endless days. 2 Asham'd of Jesus! sooner far

Let evening blush to own a star
He sheds the beams of light divine
O'er this benighted soul of mine.
3 Asham'd of Jesus! just as soon
Let midnight be asham'd of noon;
'Tis midnight with my soul till he,
Bright Morning Star! bids darkness flee.
4 Asham'd of Jesus! that dear friend
On whom my hopes of heav'n depend!
No; when I blush-be this my shame,
That I no more revere his name.
5 Asham'd of Jesus! yes, I may,
When I've no gui't to wash away,
No tear to wipe, 1 o good to crave,
No fears to quell, no soul to save.
6 Till then-nor is my boasting vain,
Till then-I boast a Saviour slain!
And O may this my glory be,
That Christ is not asham'd of me!

Baptism a Privilege.

If thou believest-thou mayest. Acts viii. 37. 1 MAY I believe that Jesus died,

And rose again for me?

May I in Jesu's name confide,
And to his bosom flee?

2 May I go down and be baptiz'd
In his most precious name?
May I for Jesus be despis'd,
And bear reproach and slame?
3 Will he permit a worm like me
Upon him to depend?

And will he to eternity

Be such a sinner's friend?

4 Yes, Lord of all! thy word is plain, And there my right I find;

Thou art the Lamb for sinners slain,
The Saviour of mankind.

5 To Jew and Gentile, bond and free,
The gospel is proclaim'd;
To ev'ry sinner-yes, to me,
My character is nam'd.

6 Infinite wisdom, pow'r, and grace,
This firm foundation lay:

On this my confidence I place;
Thy gospel I obey.

7 Thy holy word my right secures,
And there will I rely;

1

While that foundation firm endures,
Who can my claim deny ?

524. Sevens. Mr. S. Deacon.
Self-Examination and Obedience.

Ye are my Friends if―. John xv. 14.

AMI Jesu's friend or foe?

Do I do his will or no?
I acknowledge him as Lord,
Do I hear and keep his word?
2 Let me no pretences bring,
For I can't deceive my king:
Whatsoever he commands,
Steadfast as the gospel stands.
3 Do I in his truth confide?
Do I in his love abide?

Do I hear his blessed voice?
Do I follow him of choice?
4 Do I take and bear his cross?
Reckon all for him as loss?
Do I humbly follow him,
Even down into the stream?
5 Jesus, thou hast died for me;
Died, to set my spirit free;
Thou art worthy as my Prince,
Rules of conduct to dispense.
6 Lord, behold me here to-day,
Thy injunction to obey;
Grant me fortitude and skill,
All thy pleasure to fulfil.
7 I desire to be thy friend;
Love thy truth, and it defend:
Special grace to me afford,
That I may not grieve the Lord.

8 Work in me to will and do;
Save my soul from ev'ry foe;
Let thy presence give me rest,
Till I'm consummately blest.

The Increase of the Church.

for the blessed Jesus reigns,

Through distant lands his triumph spread,

And sinners, free'd from endless pains,
Own him their Saviour and their Head.
2 His sons and daughters from afar,
Daily at Sion's gates arrive;
Those who were dead in sin before,
By sovereign grace are made alive.
3 Oppressors bow beneath his feet,
O'ercome by his victorious power,
Princes in humble posture wait,

And proud blasphemers learn t' adore. 4 Gentiles and Jews his laws obey,

Nations remote their offerings bring, And, unconstrain'd, their homage pay To their exalted God and King.

5 O may his conquests still increase,

And while fresh wreaths adorn his brow, Let angels celebrate his praise,

And saints his growing glories show.

6 Loud hallelujahs to the Lamb,
From all below and all above,
In lofty songs exalt his name,
In songs, as lasting as his love.

526. C. M. J. Newton.

1" PR all the sons of men:

ROCLAIM," saith Christ," my wondrous

He that believes, and is baptiz'd,
Salvation shall obtain."

2 Let plenteous grace descend on those,
Who hoping in thy word,

This day have publicly declar'd,

That Jesus is their Lord.

3 With cheerful feet may they go on,
And run the christian race;

And in the troubles of the way,
Find all-sufficient grace.

[grace,

I am with you. Matt. xxviii. 20.
TOLY Jesus, now defend us,

1H thy promise we depend;

All we want, in mercy send us;
Be our ever present friend.
2 In obedience to our Saviour,
We expose ourselves to shame;
O! may we enjoy thy favour,
While we glorify thy name."

528. L. M. Mr. S. Deacon.
Cheerful Obedience.

WHY should we tarry or delay,

Immanuel's precepts to obey?
What he was pleas'd to institute,
We should obey, and not dispute.
2 Gracious Redeemer! we appear
On this occasion to revere

Thy great authority; and show
Our readiness thy will to do.

Conclusion.

[ocr errors]

! For a plenitude of grace,
Descending from above:

To overwhelm the human race
With peace, and joy, and love.
2 Grant, heav'nly King! what we desire,
And send the happy day,

When ALL shall after thee inquire,
And cheerfully obey.

3 Then will the nations serve the Lord
With purity and zeal :

With candour hear his blessed word,
With pleasure do his will.

LORD'S SUPPER.

1 NATURE with open volume stands, To spread her Maker's praise abroad:

And ev'ry labour of his hands

Shows something worthy of a God.
