3 Thy glories blaze all nature round, And strike the gazing sight,

Through skies, and seas, and solid ground,
With terror and delight!

[ocr errors]

4 Infinite strength and equal skill
Shine through the worlds abroad:
Our Souls with vast amazement fill,
And speak the builder God.
5 But still the wonders of thy grace
Our softer passions move;
Pity divine in Jesu's face
We see, adore, and love!

82. L. M. Dr. Watts.

The Creation, Preservation, and Dissolution of this World.

1

ING to the Lord that built the skies,
The Lord that rear'd this stately frame;

Let all the nations sound his praise,

And lands unknown repeat his name.
2 He form'd the seas, and form'd the hills,
Made ev'ry drop and ev'ry dust,
Nature and time, with all their wheels,
And push'd them into motion first.
3 Now from his high imperial throne
He looks far down upon the spheres;
He bids the shining orbs roll on,

And round he turns the hasty years.
4 Thus shall this moving engine last
Till all his saints are gather'd in;
Then for the trumpet's dreadful blast,
To shake it all to dust again!

5 Yet, when the sound shall tear the skies, And light'ning burn the globe below, Saints, you may lift your joyful eyes, There's a new heav'n and earth for you. 83. C. M. Dr. Watts.

God's Wonders of Creation, Providence, and Redemption. Psalm cxxxvi.

1IVE thanks to God the sov'reign Lord;

Githaekies still ente

And be the King of kings ador'd,

His truth is ever sure.

What wonders hath his wisdom done!
How mighty is his hand!

Heav'n, carth, and sea, he fram'd alone;
How wide is his command!

3 The sun supplies the day with light:
How bright his counsels shine!
The moon and stars adorn the night;
Ilis works are all divine.

4 lle saw the nations dead in sin:
Ile felt his pity move:

How sad the state the world was in!
How boundless was his love!
5 Ile sent to save us from our woe;
His goodness never fails;

From death and hell, and ev'ry foe:
And still his grace prevails.

6 Give thanks to God the heav'nly king:
His mercies still endure,

1

Let the whole earth his praises sing;
His truth is ever sure.

84. L. M. Dr. Watts.

Psalm cxxxvi.

GIME to our God immortal praise;
Mercy and truth are all his ways;
Wonders of grace to God belong,
Repeat his mercies in your song.
2 Give to the Lord of lords renown,
The King of kings with glory crown:
Ilis mercies ever shall endure,

When lords and kings are known no more.
3 He built the earth, he spread the sky,
And fix'd the starry lights on high:
Wonders of grace to God belong,
Repeat his mercies in your song.
4 Ile fills the sun with morning light;
He bids the moon direct the night;
His mercies ever shall endure,

When suns and moons shall shine no more. 5 He sent his Son with pow'r to save

From guilt and darkness, and the grave: Wonders of grace to God belong

Repeat his mercies in your song.

6 Through this vain world he guides our feet,
And leads us to his heav'nly seat;
His mercies ever shall endure,

When this vain world shall be no more!

Creation and Providence.

LORD, when our raptured thought surveys

Creation's beauties o'er,

All nature joins to teach thy praise,
And bid our souls adore.
2 Where'er we turn our gazing eyes,
Thy radiant footsteps shine;

Ten thousand pleasing wonders rise,
And speak their source divine.
3 The living tribes of countless forms
In earth, and sea, and air,

The meanest flies, the smallest worms,
Almighty pow'r declare.

4 Thy wisdom, pow'r, and goodness, Lord,
In all thy works appear:

And O! let man thy praise record-
Man, thy distinguish'd care!

5 From thee the breath of life he drew,
That breath thy pow'r maintains;
Thy tender mercy ever new

His brittle frame sustains.

6 On us, thy Providence has shone
With gentle smiling rays;

O! may our lips and lives make known
Thy goodness and thy praise.

PROVIDENCE.

-86. L. M. Dr. Watts.

Praise for common and special Mercies.
Psalm lxviii. Third Part.

1 WE bless the Lord, the just, the good,

Who fills our hearts with joy and food;

Who pours his blessings from the skies,
And loads our days with rich supplies.

E

2 He sends the sun his circuit round,
To cheer the fruit, to warm the ground;
He bids the clouds, with plenteous rain,
Refresh the thirsty earth again.

3 'Tis to his care we owe our breath,
And all our near escapes from death;
Safety and health to God belong;

He heals the weak and guards the strong.
4 He makes the saint and sinner prove
The common blessings of his love:
But the wide diff'rence that remains
Is endless joy, or endless pains.

5 The Lord that bruis'd the serpent's head,
On all the serpent's seed shall tread;
The stubborn sinner's hope confound,
And smite him with a lasting wound.

6 But his right-hand his saints shall raise
From the deep earth, or deeper seas;
And bring them to his courts above,
There shall they taste his special love!

Praise for the Blessings of Providence and Grace.

ALMIGHTY FATHER, gracious Lord!

Kind guardian of my days,

Thy mercies let my heart record
In songs of grateful praise.

2 In life's first dawn, my tender frame
Was thy indulgent care,

Long ere I could pronounce thy name,
Or breathe the infant pray'r.

3 Each rolling year new favours brought
From thy exhaustless store;

But ah! in vain my lab'ring thought
Would count thy mercies o'er.

4 While sweet reflection, through my days,
Thy bounteous hand would trace;
Still deare: blessings claim my praise,
The blessings of thy grace.

1

5 Yes, I adore thee, gracious Lord!
For favours more divine;

That I have known thy sacred word,
Where all thy glories shine.

6 Lord, when this mortal frame decays,
And every weakness dies,
Complete the wonders of thy grace,
And raise me to the skies.

7 Then shall my joyful pow'rs unite,
In more exalted lays,

And join the happy sons of light
In everlasting praise!

88. L. M. Dr. Watts. Ps. xxxvi. 5-9. General Providence and special Grace.

Hthy goodness in full glory shines;

JIGH in the heav'ns, eternal God,

Thy truth shall break through every cloud That veils and darkens thy designs!

2 For ever firm thy Justice stands,

As mountains their foundations keep;
Wise are the wonders of thy hands;
Thy judgments are a mighty deep.
3 Thy providence is kind and large,
Both man and beast thy bounty share;
The whole creation is thy charge,
But saints are thy peculiar care.

4 My God! how excellent thy grace! Whence all my hope and comfort springs: The sons of Adam in distress

Fly to the shadow of thy wings.

5 From the provisions of thy house
We shall be fed with sweet repast;
There mercy like a river flows,
And brings salvation to our taste.

6 Life, like a fountain, rich and free,
Springs from the presence of my Lord;
And in thy light our souls shall see
The glories promis'd in thy word
