Hatefee, published by Sir Wm. Jones at Calcutta, is mentioned, p. 296 as that which Mr. C. Fox of Bristol has translated, but in a letter since received from him, he says that the Leelee and Mejnoon which he has translated, is not by Hatafee, but by Hallalee: and thus describes it. "This word consists of thirty-five books: and of these, six are introductory, and one explanatory; that the historical part consists of twenty-eight books. It approaches nearer to our ideas of an Epic poem than any other Oriental composition I have met with. The unity of action and the truth of character are never violated. The author shews an intimate acquaintance with the human heart and mental powers; together with a general knowledge of science and nature. His taste is so chaste and correct, that he never suffers the energies of his poetic flights to carry him beyond the bounds of probability, into the regions of fiction." This is the first work of the kind ever attempted by a European from the Oriental writers, and when once known in Britain, will undoubtedly do honour both to the author and his translator, Mr. Fox.

Deewani Hafiz. The poems of Mohammed Shemseddeen Khooajeh Hafiz of the city of Sheeraz, who died in the 791st year of the Hijrah, A. D. 1340. Hafiz is the most elegant and sublime of all the Persian poets, and by all who understand his language, whether Heathens,

Mohammedans, or Christians, his work is read with rapture. Even the Hindoos who hate the Mohammedan religion and despise the Christian, read, sing, and transcribe these poems; and lest they should be guilty of any profanity towards the object of their own religious worship in so doing, sometimes inscribe each page to their god Ram. As there are very few copies of this work to be found which are not deficient in some of the Gazels or Odes, and as Meninski's account of the number under each letter in a MS. he collated has been generally resorted to as a standard, and as it is evident he has made a very capital mistake in this enumeration, I shall subjoin a Synopsis of five copies in my own possession, collated with that of Meninski and the MS. in the Chetham Library, Manchester, collated by the the Rev. Mr. Hindley. See the Appendix to his Persian Lyrics, 4to. Lond. 1800.

A correct edition of the text of Hafiz is said to have been printed several years ago at Calcutta. A copy of this I have not been able to procure even in India.

The number of Odes under each letter of the Alphabet, in five copies of the Deewani Hafez in the Editor's possession, collated with the MS. of Meninski, and that in the Chetham Library, Manchester.
