bont half way between them, will take them over the bar in the deepest part where there is depth 12 feet at high water spring tides, and they must then bear away for the small buoy, which is laid down on the point of a sandbak projecting from the north point of the entrance, and pass it on the right or South side. At low water there are heavy breakers right across the mouth whenever the wind is from the Westward, and even at high tide the swell that rolls in across the bar is extremely high The Kedy waree mouth is situated 4 miles E S. E of the Hujamaree entrance in latitude 24 6. 30. north, and has a beacon in the shape of a slender pyramid 25 feet high on its no th point. It is approached by a channel about 5 miles long, and from 690 to 00 yards broad, at the entrance of which a large buoy has been placed in 31 fathom‹. From this buoy, the beacon at the mouth of the river hears N. E. N., and that at the Huja, maree mouth NW After the buoy is passed steer N. E. b. N. N. keeping the beacon a point open to the Eastward, until the Hujamaree beacon hears N W. N., then steer for the former Along this line there is no where less than 10 feet at high water spring tiles. NOTIFICATION, GENERAL DEPARTMENT.-Head Quarters, Camp, Cawnpore, 1st Jan. 1838.-The Honarable Sir Charles Metcalfe, Bart., GC8 having this day received the sanction of the Gover nor General to relinquish his charge of the office of Lieutenant Governor of the N. W. Provinces, with permission to proceed to the presidency, preparatory to bis embarkation for Europe, the Governor General has, in confirmity with the resolution recorded in the Legislative Department on the 4th september 1837. assumed the immediate superintendence of the Affairs of those provinces.

The Governor General is pleased to direct, that Sir Charles Metcalfe shall continue to receive all the honors due to the station of Lieut-Governor, and that the officers of his personal staff shall remain attached to him until he may finally vacate that office by bis embarkation for Europe.

Mr. C Macsween is appointed to be secretary to the Governor General for the N W Provinces, in the Judicial, Revenue and General Department.

The fo lowing gentlemen are admitted to the service, in con. formity with their appintment by the Honorable the court of Directors as cadets of artillery and infantry on this establishment, and promoted to the rank of 2d lieutenant and ensign respectively,

leaving the dates of their commissions for future adjustment: Military Retiring Fund could be successfully formed, we had Artillery Mr. Henry Lewis, date of arrival at Fort William, thought it right so far as we could feel justified in doing so to 17th December 1837, and Mr. John Mill, ditto 18th ditto. rovide for the object contemplated in schemes of that nature by Infantry-Messrs. Deane Christian Shute, Arthur Carrington an enlargement of the Retiring Regulations, and that we had in and Athill Turner, ditto 16th December 1837; Walter William consequence resolved to grant the full pay of Captain to every Davies Voyle and Orfeur Cavenagh, ditto 17th ditto, and Byam officer who should have served in India 23 years. (3 years furMartin Loveday ditto 18th ditto. lough included) whether he had attained that rank tegimentally or not, and the full pay of each of the superior ranks of Major, Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel after th com lesion of an additional period of 5 years service for each of those ranks in such cession. viz.

The undermentioned officers are permitted to proceed to Europe on furlough:

Brigadier Gabriel Richard Penny, of the 11th regiment N I commanding the station of Barrackpore; Lieutenant colonel Joseph Harris, of the 63d regiment N. I, and ensign Robert Inglis, of the 37th re ́iment N. I., on medical certificate.

Brevet colonel Forster Walker, of the 334 regiment NI; captain Frederick Goventry, of the 6th regiment light cavalry; Lieutenant George Richard siddons, of the 1st regiment light cavalry, and Lieutenant Pringle shortreed, of the 17th regiment N. 1., on account of private affairs.

Surgeon Nathanial Morgan, of the medical department and of the Nizam's service, is permitted to proceed to Enrope on fur. lough, on account of his private affairs, from Bombay.

Colonel John Peter Boileau, of the regiment of artillery, is permitted to proceed to the Cape of Good Hope, on medical certificate, and to be absent from Bengal on that account for two years.

Lieutenant John Michael Loughnan, of the 10th regiment light Cavalry, fort adjutant of Fort William, is permitted to proceed to New South Wales, on medical certificate, and to be absent from Bengal on that account for two years.

1st ieutenant R. Walker, of the regiment of artillery Aide de camp to Major General Sleigh, of the staff of the Madras army, has leave of absence from the 15th January to the 15th July next, to enable him to rejoin his company.

Major Peter Johnston, of the 5th regiment native infantry, 2d Assistant to the resident at indore, is permitted t› retire from the service of the East India company, from the 15th instant, on the pension of a Lieutenant colonel, agreeably to regulation of the 23d May 1836.

Captain William Ellis, of the 45th regiment native infantry, is permitted to retire from the service of the East India company, on the half pay of his rank, from the date of departure of the ship on which he my embark for Europe.

His honor in council is pleased to make the following promotions:

Ordnance commissariat department.-Sub-conductor Joseph Vyal to be conductor, an! Serjeant Patrick Bentley to be sub Conductor, from the 29th November, 1837, vice Irish deceased.

For Major's pay, 28 years service, including 3 years for a furlough.

For Lieut. Colonel's pay 33 ditto ditto.
For Colonel's pay, 35 ditto ditto.

Being now of opinion that some additional advantage in res pect the periods of retirement may properly be granted to the Senior Officers w o would have been more especially the immediate objects of benefit from a Retir ng Fund had such a fund been esta lished. we have resolved that the period of service to qualify an Officer for the pay of each adv need rank after that of Captain, shall be reduced from five to four years, the periods of service in India required for e ch rank being consequently hereafte- as follows, v z.

Assistant Apothecary James Hifferan is appointed by the De. puty Governor of Fort William, to the grison dispensary in Fort William, vice Peterson.

Mem randum -The date of the return from the furlough of Major G. N. C. Campbell, of the regiment of artillery, and Captain W. Saurin, of 31st regiment uative infantry, is the 15th instant, instead of the 16th, as announced in general orders No. 250, of the 18th instant. The o der books to be altered accord. ingly.

Fort William, December, 29th 1837-No. 257 of 1837.-In continuation of General Orders No 75, of the 19th April last, the following para. of a Military Letter, No 3, from the Hon'ble the Court of Directors to the Governor General of India in council under date the 5th July 1837, and the further warrant, dated the 26th May 1837. granting additional advantages to Solliers in Her Majesty's Service, for good conduct, therein referred to, are pub. Jissed in General Orders.

Para. I. In continuation four Letter in this Department dated the 19th October 1836, No 12, we transmit a farther War ant received from He. Majesty's Secretary at War dated the 26th May 1837, granting additional advantages to Soldiers for good conduct, you will adopt similar measures for bringing this Warrant into operation to those pursued by you on carrying into effect the previous War ant which accompanied our Letter of October 1836 above quoted.

2. We have now to inform you that at the public examination which was held at the military seminary on the 12th June list, Messrs. Henry Lewis and Robert Christie were found to have rendered themselves worthy of the distinction of receiving the

honorary certificate which was presented to them in our name accordingly.

3. In conformity with the last part of our resolution of the 30th November 18 6, we forward for your observation, and also for pub ication in general orders, a copy of the repo tof Major General Sir A. Dickson on the merits of Messrs, Lewis and Christie, who were selected for the artillery and stationed to your presi dency, but Mr. Christie has since been allowed to resign that branch of the service for a cavalry appointmeat

At a Court of Directors held on Wednesday the 30th November 1836. Resolved. That this court entirely concur in the propriety and expediency of the suggestions which are offered in the letter from Colonel Sir Alexander Dickson and Colonel tannus, with a view to the encouragement of young men of talent at the mi itary se minary, to persevere in the diligent study of the various branches of sc ence pursued at that ins itution

That as, from the want of vacancies in the scientific corps, there is not at the present period sufficient object for emula ion, it is desirable as an incitement to encreased application on the part of the gentlemen cadets, to grant honorary certificates of diligence and good conduct to those who, although they may have been unsuccessful in attaining engineer appoin men's, may be considered to merit some testimony of approbation for their exertiou in study and regularity of behaviour while at the institu
