The commander-in-chief signals :

On the left division, form column of vessels-rear in fronthead of van and centre divisions W.*_head of rear division S.W.

The flag-ships of van and centre divisions signal: Head of division W.

Flag-ship of rear division signals: Head of division S.W.; and the manæuvre is performed as explained in the 1st Method, and shown by C.

It is evident that direction may be changed to the left by forming the column to the S.W., on the van division; but then the fleet will be in order reversed, the van division being on the left, as shown by D.

If the commander-in-chief please, he may omit signal. ling the course to the van and centre divisions. (See note to 1st Method.)

58. The fleet being in columns of vessels abreast, by

divisions, in natural order, heading N., to change direction to the right, on any course from N. to E.

Suppose, for example, it be required to steer N.E.

Performed as explained in manœuvre 44, and shown by Fig. 90, and so soon as the commander-in-chief observes that the leader of the van division is approaching the wake of the rear and centre divisions, steering N.W., he signals : Heads of divisions N.E., and the manoeuvre is completed, as shown by A.

It is evident that direction may be changed to the right, by forming the column to the N. W. on the van division ; but then the fleet will be in order reversed, the van division being on the left, as shown by B.
