In November, 1698, he sailed for Pennsylvania, where at the request of Penn, who shortly followed, he remained 16 years. He was chosen the first Recorder of Philadelphia by a charter of 25 Oct., 1701, was a Member of the Council of State, Keeper of the Great Seal, Master of the Rolls, and in 1706 elected Mayor of Philadelphia. He was further Treasurer of the Pennsylvania Land Co. Nachricht vom Aufange und Fortgange der Grondlandischen 4to, half calf. Hamburg, 1740. £335 Some Hans. Egede, the founder of the Danish Missions to Greenland, was born at Harstad = Norway in 1686. He was ordained pastor of Vaagen in 1707. Having for many years cherished the desire of converting the Greenlanders, he obtained the assistance of the king, Frederick the Fourth, and a trading-company was forme to co-operate with the mission. In 1721 Egede sailed with one ship, and 45 persons, they were kindly received by the natives, many of whom were converted. The Danes were unable to subsist without frequent supplies from the Mother-Country, and the trading-company was dissolved in 1727. Egede pursued his purpose with constancy through great hardships and privations, until the death of his wife in 1735. Moravian missionaries having arrived to continue the work, he then returned to Copenhagen, where he became superintendent of a seminary for the Greenland Mission, with the title of Bishop, and wrote the narrative of his enterprise.
