Description of the Drawings.

The Gordon Collection of over 400 Unpublished Water-Colour Drawings made from 1777 to 1790, depicting the Coast Line and immediate Interior, the Natives, Quadrupeds, Birds, Reptiles, and Botany of South Africa, more particularly the district in and around The Cape of Good Hope.

All the drawings are most carefully made to a given scale and elaborately finished with scientific descriptions in Dutch. They are classified and bound in 6 volumes (4 elephant folio and 2 Atlas elephant folio). Half morocco.

It is impossible to give in a Catalogue an adequate description of this Unique and Marvellous Collection.

The Views and Plans, many of which are of gigantic size, the largest measuring no less than 25 feet in length, give a Picture of The Cape at a period of the greatest interest—just when the Dutch Possession was ending. It has hitherto been thought that no accurate early plans of the Country were in existence, but these prove that the Dutch Government were minutely charting the Coast as well as the Country around their Colony. The Plans and Views of the Orange River are the first ever made, as this Colonel Gordon was the first to explore the District, and to give it its name, calling it after The Prince of Orange. These Views are comprised in the 2 Atlas Elephant Folio.

The drawings of the Natives, Fauna and Flora, comprised in the four elephant Folios depict every kind of living person or thing

found in South Africa during the Dutch occupation in 1777-1795, and give surprisingly vivid illustrations of native customs and Natural History. There are several drawings of Big Game Huntingone showing an exciting hippopotamus hunt, with one of the huge creatures being dragged out alive by a herd of oxen, of a big game shoot of eight giraffes, etc.
