Thou hast ascended on high, led captivity captive, received gifts for men, &c.-Ps. lxviii. 18.

Let thy hand be upon the man of thy right hand; upon the Son of man, whom thou madest strong for thyself.-Ps. lxxx. 17.

The stone which the builders refused is become the head of the corner. -Ps. cxviii. 22; Acts iv. 11, 12; Isa. xxviii. 16; 1 Pet. ii. 6.

The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was, &c. then I was by him, as one brought up, and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him, rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.-Prov. viii. 22, 23-31.

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light: they who dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined, &c. For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given, &c.-Isa. ix. 2, 3. 6; Matt. iv. 15, 16.

There shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles, &c.-Isa. xi. 1, 2. 10; lx. 1, &c.

Behold, a king shall reign, &c. a man shall be a hiding-place from the wind.-Isa. xxxii. 1-3.

O Zion, who bringeth good tidings, &c. Behold, the Lord shall come, &c. His arm shall rule for him, his reward is with him, he shall feed his flock like, &c.-Isa. xl. 9-11; lxii. 11.

Behold, my servant whom I uphold, &c. he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles; he shall not cry, nor lift up, &c. I will give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles, to open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners.-Isa. xlii.

The Lord hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season, &c. I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks, &c.—Isa. l. 4. 6; Matt. xxvi. 67.

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings, &c. to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them who are bound, &c.-Isa. lxi. 1, &c.; Luke iv. 17-21; Isa. xlv. 13.

Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments? &c. Mighty to save. Wherefore art thou red in apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth? &c.-Isa. lxiii. 1—3.

I will raise unto David a righteous branch, &c. and in his days Judah shall be saved, &c. He shall be called THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOusness.Jer. xxiii. 5, 6; John i. 45.

I called my son out of Egypt, &c. Thou, Bethlehem, &c. out of thee shall he come.-Hosea xi. 1; Micah v. 2; Matt. ii. 6. 15.

I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come, &c.Hag. ii. 7.

Behold the man whose name is the Branch, and he shall grow up out of his place; and he shall build the temple of the Lord, &c.-Zech. vi. 12, 13.

Behold, thy king cometh; he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt, the foal of an ass, &c.-Zech. ix. 9; Matt. xxi. 5. 7, 8.

They weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver, &c.-Zech. xi. 12, 13; Matt. xxvi. 15.

That which is conceived in her, is of the Holy Ghost, and she shall bring forth a Son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.—Matt. i. 20, 21; xviii. 11.

The Star directed the wise men unto Jesus.-Matt. ii. 9-11.

The Spirit of God, like a dove, | lighting upon Jesus; and lo, a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.-Matt. iii. 16, 17.

John said unto him, Art thou he that should come? or do we look for another? Jesus said, &c. Shew John, &c. The blind receive their sight, &c. And blessed is he whosoever shall not be offended in me, &c. For this is he of whom it is written, &c. Come unto me, all ye that labour, &c.-Matt. xi. 2-6. 9, 10. 28, 29.

The voice out of the cloud said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased: hear ye him.-Matt.

xvii. 5.

And the angel said, &c. I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people: for unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Saviour, which is Christ, the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you, Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger, &c. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good-will towards men, &c. Simeon, to whom it was revealed by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ, took up the child Jesus in his arms, and blessed God, and said, &c. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, &c.- Luke ii. 10-12. 14. 25, 26. 28. 30–32.

They who are whole need not a physician, &c. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. -Luke v. 31, 32.

Jesus said unto Zacchæus, This day is salvation come to this house, &c. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.Luke xix. 8-10; Matt. xviii. 11.

John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away (or beareth) the sin of the world, &c. We have found the Messias; which is (being interpreted) the Christ. And he brought him to Jesus, &c. Philip saith to Nathanael, We have found him, of whom

Moses in the law and the prophets did write; Jesus, &c.-John i. 29, 30. 34. 36. 41, 42. 45.

As Moses lifted up the serpent, &c. even so must the Son of man be lifted up; that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life, &c. That the world through him should be saved.-John iii. 14, 15. 17; Numb. xxi. 8, 9.

I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus saith unto her, I who speak unto thee am he.-John iv. 25, 26; Acts ix. 5; xxii. 8.

The works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father sent me, &c. Ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.-John v. 36. 40.

Labour, &c. for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed, &c. The bread of God, is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world, &c. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me, shall never hunger, &c. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever, &c.-John vi. 27. 33. 35. 51. When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, &c.-John viii. 28.

Jesus said, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he who talketh with thee.-John ix. 35-37.

I am the door, (said Jesus,) by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, &c. I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good Shepherd, &c. I give unto them eternal life.John x. 9-11. 15. 28; xiv. 6.

I came not to judge, &c. but to save the world.-John xii. 47. I have glorified thee on earth, I

have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.—John xvii. 4.

These things are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that, believing, ye might have life through his name. -John xx. 31.

Jesus Christ, &c. whom ye crucified, whom God raised, &c. This is the stone which was set at nought, &c. Neither is there salvation in any other for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved, &c. Against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, &c.-Acts iv. 1012. 27.

Jesus, whom ye slew, &c. him hath God exalted, &c. to be a Prince, and a Saviour; to give repentance unto Israel, and forgiveness of sins.-Acts v. 30, 31.

Through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins.-Acts xiii, 38.

We believe, that through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, &c.-Acts xv. 11.

Paul, &c. reasoned with them out of the scriptures, &c. that this Jesus whom I preach unto you, is Christ. Acts xvii. 2, 3.

Jesus Christ, whom God hath set forth (or fore-ordained) to be a propitiation, through faith in his blood. -Rom. iii. 24, 25.

Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. Rom. iv. 25.

When we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly, &c. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us, &c. If when we were enemies, we were reconciled uuto God by the death of his Son, &c. Our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.— Rom. v. 6. 8. 10, 11.

Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God, through Jesus Christ our Lord.-Rom. vii. 24, 25.

For other foundation can no man lay, than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.-1 Cor. iii. 11.

They were all baptized unto Moses, &c. did all drink the same spiritual drink; for they drank of the same spiritual Rock which followed (or went with) them; and that Rock was Christ, &c. Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them, &c.-1 Cor. x. 2. 4. 9.

All the promises of God in him are Yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God.--2 Cor. i. 20.

God, who hath reconciled us to himself, by Jesus Christ, &c. God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself.-2 Cor. v. 18, 19.

Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins.-Gal. i. 3, 4.

In him we are blessed, chosen, adopted, accepted, have remission of sins, all things.-Eph. i. 3, &c.

The Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.-Gal. ii. 20.

God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, &c. to redeem them who were under the law, &c. Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us, &c.-Gal. iv. 4, 5; iii. 13; Col. i. 14; Heb. ix. 11, 12.

Blessed be God, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings, &c. in Christ, &c. Chosen us, predestinated us to the adoption of children by Jesus, &c. made us accepted in the Beloved; in whom we have, &c. remission of sins, according to the riches of his grace.-Eph. i. 3, &c.

God, &c. hath quickened us together with Christ, &c. raised us, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus; who made us nigh, &c. Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom all the building, &c. -Eph. ii. 5, 6. 13, 14. 20, 21.

Christ is the head of the Church, and the Saviour of the body.-Eph. v. 23.

We look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.-Phil. iii. 20.

It pleased the Father that in him

should all fulness dwell, &c. By him to reconcile all things unto himself, Christ in (or among) you, the hope of glory.-Col. i. 19, 20. 27. Your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall, &c.-Col. iii. 3, 4.

His Son Jesus, who delivered us from the wrath to come.-1 Thess. i. 10.

This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, That Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.-1 Tim. i. 15.

One Mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.-1 Tim. ii. 5, 6.

Is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light. -2 Tim. i. 10.

Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, &c.—Titus ii. 13, 14; Eph. v. 2.

His Son, &c. when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down, &c.Heb. i. 2, 3.

Christ, &c. He became the author of eternal salvation unto all them, &c. -Heb. v. 5. 9; 2 Tim. ii. 10.

He continues ever, &c. wherefore he is able to save to the uttermost (or for ever) those who come to God by him.-Heb. vii. 24, 25.

Christ now once in the end of the world hath he appeared, to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself, &c. Unto them who look for him, shall he appear the second time, without sin, unto salvation.-Heb. ix. 24. 26. 28.

We are sanctified through the offering of the body of Christ once for all, &c. By one offering he hath perfected for ever them who are sanctified, &c.-Heb. x. 10. 14.

Looking to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.—Heb. xii. 2.

Who hath begotten us again unto a lively hope, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, &c. The prophets, &c. who prophesied of the grace, &c. searching what, &c. the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory which should follow, &c. Ye were not redeemed with silver and gold, &c. but with the precious blood of Christ, &c. who verily was fore-ordained, before the foundation of the world, &c.1 Pet. i. 3. 10, 11. 18-20.

We did not by art, &c. make known the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, &c. but as those who had seen his majesty with our eyes, &c. He received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased: and this voice, which came from heaven, we heard, when we were with him, &c.-2 Pet. i. 16-18.

Jesus Christ, &c. he is the propitiation for our sins and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world, &c. Who is a liar, but he who denieth that Jesus is the Christ?1 John ii. 1, 2. 22.

And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins, and in him is no sin, &c. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil.-1 John iii. 5. 8.

God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him, &c. We, &c. testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.-1 John iv. 9. 14.

God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.-1 John v. 11, 12.

Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood.Rev. i. 5; Col. i. 14.

They fell down before the Lamb, &c. saying, Thou art worthy, &c. for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed

us to God by thy blood, out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation: and hast made us unto our God, &c.-Rev. v. 8-10.

shall be continued as long as the sun, (or shall be as a Son, to continue his Father's name for ever,) &c. And all nations shall call him blessed.-Ps. lxxii. 8, 9. 11. 17, 18; xci. throughout.

I will set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers, &c. Also

The Lamb slain from the foundation of the world, &c.-Rev. xiii. 8. I, Jesus, have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things, &c. II will make him my first-born, higher am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.-Rev. xxii. 16.

THIRDLY, The Excellency of this Saviour, and his Fulness and Dignity.

In his Person and Authority. YET have I set my king (or anointed) upon my holy hill of Sion, &c. The Lord hath said, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee, &c. I shall give thee the heathen for thy inheritance, &c. thou shalt break them with a rod of iron, &c.-Ps. ii. 6-9; xviii. 43, 44.

Thou art fairer than the children of men, grace is poured into thy lips, &c. Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most mighty, with thy glory, and thy majesty; and in thy majesty ride, &c. Thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the king's enemies, whereby the people shall fall under thee. Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre, &c. God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows, &c. The King, &c. he is thy Lord, and worship thou him.-Ps. xlv. 1-6. 11; Isa. xlix. 2; Numb. xxiv. 17-19.

than the kings of the earth, &c. His throne as the days of heaven, as the sun before me.-Ps. lxxxix. 25. 27. 29. 36.

The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool, &c. Rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.Ps. cx. 1, 2. 5, 6; Isa. xi. 4.

Wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things which may be desired, are not to be compared unto it, &c. Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding, I have strength: by me kings reign, and princes decree justice. By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth, &c. Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness. My fruit is better than gold, &c. I cause those who love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures, &c. the Lord possessed me in the beginning, &c. when he appointed the foundations of the earth, then I was by him, &c. His delight; whoso findeth me, findeth life, &c.—Prov. viii. 11. 14—16. 18–23. 29, 30. 35.

Thy name is as ointment poured out, &c.-Cant. i. 3.

The beauty of his person described by the parts thereof, and said in the close to be altogether lovely.—Cant. iv. 10-16; Rev. i. 13-15.

A virgin shall, &c. bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel, God with us, &c.-Isa. vii. 14; Matt. i. 23.

Unto us a child is born, &c. his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace; of the increase of his government and
