[ocr errors]

This is a good comedy, but the humour is low, as may be supposed from the running title, and not very decent.

Svo, original calf, rebacked. 12429 The Miser. A COMEDY, taken from Plautus and Moliere, as it is Acted at the Theatre Royal in Drury-Lane. By HENRY FIELDING, Esq. J. Watts, 1733. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, sewn, FINE COPY. £4 4s Dedication to Charles, Duke of Richmond, Prologue spoken by Mr. Bridgewater. Epilogue written by COLLEY CIBBER, spoken by Mrs. Raftor.

This comedy is the only one of Fielding's Plays which keeps possession of the stage. It is taken from Moliere, who borrowed the principal characters from the Aurelasia of Plautus. Fielding has improved the catastrophe, and the characters of Lappet and Mariana are better than the corresponding ones in Moliere, or in Shadwell's Miser. It, however, wants incident, a fault which Shadwell avoids by means of an underplot. Victor says: 'Griffin remained little noticed till this play came out, in which he showed great abilities, and met with general approbation.' is hardly correct, for Griffin had played several good parts before The Miser.
