This comedy is the only one of Fielding's Plays which keeps possession of the stage. It is taken from Moliere, who borrowed the principal characters from the Aurelasia of Plautus. Fielding has improved the catastrophe, and the characters of Lappet and Mariana are better than the corresponding ones in Moliere, or in Shadwell's Miser. It, however, wants incident, a fault which Shadwell avoids by means of an underplot.
