It will be observed that the present book is an humble imitation of the justly famous guide-books of the late Augustus Hare. Following the example of that admirable cicerone, I have, whenever a place or an event has been already well described, preferred to quote the author's words rather than to appropriate his matter and by re-setting his phrases make it appear to be my own.
