The Literary Contents of the Volume have been supplied by a great number of the most eminent Authors of the day; especially those who have been distinguished as writers for the juvenile classes. With regard to the character of this department of the work, it may be remarked, that whilst the amusement of the juvenile reader has been a principal aim, the utmost care has been taken to exclude every thing which could be liable to objection from the most scrupulous parent. AN Improvement long aimed at by the Literary Gazette has, at length, been accomplished, and that Journal has throughout the past Season given a complete view of the progress of literature and science of Great Britain, as developed by the Proceedings of ALL the National and Leading Institutions devoted to their cultivation. It was not till the Literary Gazette had, in consequence of its independent character, and general circulation in every direction at home and abroad, acquired much public influence, and by considerable perseverance in seeking to establish the necessary intercourse, that this important object was attained the result of which is, that it regularly diffuses throughout the civilized world, a knowledge of every thing interesting which occurs in all the Learned and Scientific Bodies in the United Kingdom, by Weekly Reports of their Transactions; besides the Proceedings of similar Learned and Scientific Societies in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, &c.; so that the whole presents a complete view of the pursuits, labours, discoveries, and improvements, of all these excellent Associations, not only to their absent members, but to the public at large.
