PREFACE.

THE pleasure of forming collections is confiderable. To have diftinguished good from bad, to have drawn it from the mafs, to have given arrangement to confufion, and illustrated truth by order, these are exertions of the intellect on which the mind reflects with pleasure; and, having once fucceeded in the attempt, eagerly anticipates new triumphs. Such were doubtless the feelings of Sir Hans Sloane, and other eminent collectors of natural and artificial objects: fuch the gratification of those who form libraries; and fuch, in fome degree, our satisfaction, when we select and arrange the authors we most approve, at the termination of our half-yearly periods. To the Connoiffeurs who fhall infpect our prefent cabinet, we can promise many pleafing fpecimens, and fome of much intrinfic value; and we fhall with great pleasure undertake to explain the fpecific merits of each part of the literary exhibition.
