PREFACE.

THIS Book contains the best pieces, serious and amusing, in Prose and Poetry, that can be comprised in a work of the kind. The standard of selection is the favor with which all the older pieces are always received by the public. Heretofore they have been scattered through a number of books, and procured with trouble and expense.

Nearly every favorite piece will be found in this work, besides a large number of new ones never before published in this form, and which only require to be known to be appreciated. Every piece has been selected upon its merits, from every source, and without prejudice of any kind. The object has been to present the best specimens of eloquence and oratory and the best selections in Poetry, for public readings.

Selections from Longfellow, Holmes, and Whittier, are inserted by permission of James R. Osgood & Co.; Lippincott & Co. kindly allowed the use of selections from Thomas Buchanan Read; and to Harper & Bros. the compiler is indebted for the use of several pieces, among which are "Over the Hills to the Poor-House," the "Spirit of Poetry," etc. Credit is given to authors, if known, in the proper place, for all the selections.
