By his loving-kindness, in showing us the true bread from Heaven.

CHAP. XVII.

Under whose directions did Israel journey in the wilderness?

According to the commandment of the Lord they journeyed, and they left the desert of Sin and came to Rephidim.

What sin did they commit there?

They tempted the Lord, saying, is the Lord among us or no?

How was this shown?

By their chiding with Moses, and fearing lest they should die of thirst.

What should they have known?

That the same God who had provided bread for their hunger, would give them water for their thirst.

How did they show their rebellion and unbelief?

By murmuring against Moses, and saying, Why hast thou brought us out of Egypt? What did Moses say to God?

What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.

How did God give him relief?

By the same rod with which he smote the sea; he told him to take it in his hand, and he said, Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink: and Moses did so; and the waters gushed out, and the congregation drank.-Ps. cv. 41.

Of what was this rock a type?

Of the Lord Jesus Christ, who was smitten for us, and from whom the waters of life flow to us.

What does Paul say of Israel, in speaking of this?

"They drank of that spiritual rock that followed them, and that rock was Christ."1 Cor. x. 4.

What else happened at Rephidim?

Amalek fought with Israel, and "smote the hindmost of them, when they were faint and weary."-Deut. xxv. 18.

Where did Moses stand?

On the top of Horeb, with the rod of God in his hand, and Joshua commanded Israel. What is said of the battle?

When Moses held up his hands Israel prevailed, and when he put down his hands Amalek prevailed.

Who stayed up the hands of Moses, when they were heavy?

Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

What happened through the prayer of Moses?

Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

What did God tell Moses to write in a book?

Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua, for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

By what name did Moses call the altar he then built?

The Lord is my banner, because he said, the Lord hath sworn that he will have war with Amalek.

What must we acknowledge when victorious over our enemies?

That the Lord is our banner or defence. What may we learn by this history?

That the way to prevail over our enemies is by prayer.

Who do the Amalekites represent ?

Those spiritual enemies who beset us in our way here, with whom we have spiritual

war.

What has God decreed concerning such? That they must perish for ever.

CHAP. XVIII.

Who met Moses at Horeb?

[ocr errors]

Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, who brought Zipporah his wife, and his two sons, Gershom and Eliezer.

Where did they encamp?

At the mount of God.

What did Moses speak to Jethro about?

All that God had done unto Pharaoh, and unto the Egyptians, for Israel's sake; and all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the Lord delivered them.

What should be the theme of our conversation when we meet God's people?

We should tell of the goodness of God, both in redeeming us from the bondage of sin and Satan, and in leading us through the dangers of the wilderness of this world.

What said Jethro on hearing of Israel's deliverance from Egypt?

He rejoiced at God's goodness, and said, Blessed be the Lord, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods for in the thing in which they dealt proudly, He was above them.—10, 11.

What may we learn in meditating on all God's ways with his people?

That he is greater than all that is against them, and that "in all things we may be more
