He has vanquished all our enemies, and has led captivity captive.

[ocr errors]

Do we get the benefit of this all at once?

No. It is only by little and little, that a Christian gains power over his enemies; they are left for a time to humble and prove him.

CHAP. XXIV.

Who were called to come up unto the Lord and worship afar off?

Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, with seventy of the elders of Israel.

What did Moses?

He alone went near the Lord, and then told the people God's words.

[ocr errors]

What said the people?

They repeated again, “All the words which the Lord hath said, will we do."

What did Moses at this time?

Moses builded an altar on the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel.-v. 4.

Who offered sacrifices on the altar?
Young men of the children of Israel.

What did Moses with the blood of these sacrifices?

One half Moses sprinkled on the altar, and after reading the book of the covenant in the audience of the people, "he sprinkled both the book, and all the people."-Heb. ix. 19.

What did he say, while sprinkling the people?

Behold the blood of the covenant, which the Lord hath made with you, concerning all these words.

What did he mean by this?

That they could not themselves keep the law, and they needed the blood of sprinkling, to cleanse them.

Of what was this sprinkling a type?

Of the blood of the Lord Jesus, which cleanseth from all sin.

What followed after the sprinkling of the blood of the covenant?

Moses, Aaron, and his sons, with seventy elders of Israel, went up, and they saw the Lord God of Israel and there was under his feet, as it were, the paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven, in

his clearness: also the nobles saw God, and did eat and drink.

What may this scene teach us?

First, of the holiness in which God dwells, set forth in the pavement of clear blue or sapphire stone; secondly, the blessed fellowship and communion with God, those enjoy, who are brought near him, through the blood of the covenant.-Matt. v. 6-8. Ps. xxvi. 8, 9.

Whom did Moses leave Israel in charge of, when he went up into the mount with his minister Joshua ?

He said, behold, Aaron and Hur are with you: if any man have any matters, let him come unto them.-v. 13, 14.

How long did the glory of God abide on Mount Sinai ?

Seven days.

What was the appearance of the glory?

66

It was devouring fire in the eyes of all Israel, and the Apostle Paul also says, our God is a consuming fire."-Compare xxiv. 17, with Heb. xii. 29.

What did Paul say, we should learn by this? To serve Him acceptably, with godly

fear and reverence, because no evil can dwell with him; and sinners may learn in it the need of a mediator between God and man; that they may not be consumed.

How long was Moses on the Mount ?

Forty days and forty nights.

What did he see on the mount with God? He was shown the patterns of the heavenly things, which accompany salvation, and the true worship of God, and instructed into the way of making their appointed emblems in the Tabernacle and its furniture.

CHAP. XXV.

Of what were these emblems to be composed?

Of heave offerings from the people, for the Lord said, "Bring me, or take for me, an offering of every man that giveth it willingly, with all his heart, shalt thou take an offering. Why was it needful to have offerings given with the heart for the tabernacle ?

Because nothing that was otherwise given could become an emblem of those things

which are freely given to us of God, and because it is said, "The Lord loveth a cheerful giver."

What things was Moses directed to receive for the work of the tabernacle?

Gold, silver, and brass; blue, purple, and scarlet; fine linen and goats hair; rams skins, dyed red, and badgers skins. Also Shittimwood, oil for the light, spices for the anointing, sweet spices, onyx, and precious stones, for the Ephod.

What may we learn by the character of these costly offerings given to complete the tabernacle and that which belonged to it?

We learn thereby the durability as well as the riches, and beauty which befit the dwelling-place of Jehovah.

What was Moses first shown?

That which pertained to the most holy place, viz. the ark of the covenant with the mercy seat, and cherubim of glory above upon it.

How were these made?

The ark was an oblong box of Shittim
