In offering this Catalogue to the Trade, I will state that it was commenced with no view to publication. For years I have kept for my own convenience what was termed a Price Book," in which all new publications were entered in alphabetical order. About two years since I commenced a revise of this Book, and after progressing nearly to completion, it was suggested by several in the Trade, who had experienced the convenience of the "Price Book," to publish. Without calculating the labor necessary to complete my task,-a labor that can be appreciated only by those who have been engaged in a similar undertaking, I concluded to prepare for the press. To the veteran in the Trade, my book as it stood, arranged under the head of the author, would have been sufficiently convenient. But to accommodate those less familiar with the business, and give greater facility for finding the work sought for, I determined to make one continuous alphabetical list, (except Biography and Law, which will be found at the end of the volume,) under the author's name, the general title of the book, and the country to which it relates. My aim has been to make a practical manual for the Trade, so arranged as to give the desired information with as little search as possible.

Of such books as have been published years since, and which are to be found only in the hands of collectors of second-hand and rare books, the size, publisher, and date of publication alone are given, as the present price is regulated by the scarcity or intrinsic value of the work.

Reprints from American publications are noted by (*), translations (†), American editors (1).

It is my purpose to continue this Catalogue by supplement at intervals, as new matter may accumulate, including alterations as they may occur in publish
