4. These, alas! full well they knew,
Sad companions of their way,-
Oft on them the tempest blew,
Thro' the long, the cheerless day!

5. Happy spirits! ye are fled,
Where no grief can entrance find :
Lull'd to rest the aching head,
Sooth'd the anguish of the mind!

6. Ev'ry tear is wip'd away,

Sighs no more shall heave the breast; Night is lost in endless day, Sorrow in eternal rest!

CXXXII.

1. Rise, my soul, and stretch thy wings, Thy better portion trace; Rise from transitory things,

Towards heaven, thy native place:

Sun and moon, and stars decay,

Time shall soon this earth remove;

Rise, my soul, and haste away
To seats prepar'd above.

2. Rivers to the ocean run,

Nor stay in all their course :
Fire ascending seeks the sun,
Both speed them to their source:
So a spirit born of God

Pants to view his glorious face,
Upward tends to his abode,
To rest in his embrace.

3. Cease, ye pilgrims, cease to mourn,
Press onward to the prize:
Soon our Saviour will return
Triumphant in the skies:
Yet a season, and you know,
Happy entrance will be given;
All our sorrows left below,

And earth exchang'd for Heaven.

CXXXIII.

1. To thee be ev'ry pray'r addrest, Omniscient pow'rdivine;

Thou know'st the secret of each breast,

Its good or ill design.

2. From the pure source of sacred truth Let all our thoughts proceed;

And midst the tempting scenes of youth, Supply the strength we need.

3. Let the full vigour of our pow'rs To thy just Glory tend

;

And in our last declining hours,
Be thou our guide, and friend.

4. Then, when assembled nations round
Thy Judgment seat shall throng,
May we among thy saints be found,
Redeeming love our Song.

CXXXIV.

1. Blest comforter! the Father's gift
'Tis thou alone canst cheer the Soul;
To Heav'n our best Affections lift,
And every sinful thought controul.

2. Thee-Heavenly Guide-by Christ reveShall vain presumptuous Man refuse? (al'd That soil, the richest fruit shall yield,

That's water'd by Celestial Dews.

3. Our Souls shall rise with nobler aim

From Satans dark dominion free; And this poor frail and mortal Frame Become fit residence for Thee.

4. Thro' Life's confus'd, bewild'ring Path,
Vouchsafe thine all directing ray;
Nor let us e'er provoke that Wrath
Which soon can cloud our brightest Day.

5. Conducted by that sacred Light
Which draws its purest flame from high;
Safely we pass the shades of Night
And hail afar the dawning Sky.

CXXXV.

1. Lord, that I

may

learn of thee,

Give me true simplicity,

Wean my soul, and keep it low,
Willing thee alone to know;

2. Let me cast myself aside
All that feeds my swelling pride,
Not to man, but God submit,
Lay my reasonings at thy feet:

3. Of my boasted wisdom spoil'd,
Docile, helpless, as a child,
Only seeing in thy light,
Only walking in thy might.

4. Then infuse thy teaching grace
God of truth and righteousness,
Knowledge, love divine, impart
Life eternal to my heart.

2 Kings 22-19,20.
CXXXVI.

:

1. O for that Tenderness of Heart
Which bows before the Lord,
Acknowledges how just thou art,
And trembles at thy word!
O for those humble contrite tears
Which from repentance flow,
That consciousness of guilt, which fears
The long suspended blow!

2. Saviour, to me in pity give
The sensible distress,

The pledge thou wilt at last receive,
And bid me die in peace!
