A LOVER'S MOODS.

A SONNET SEQUENCE by the late BERTRAM DOBELL.

Handsomely printed at the Shakespeare Head Press, on Abbey Mill Paper.

"In A Century of Sonnets' (1910) Bertram Dobell exhibited a mastery in the most exacting form of poetic expression, and in 'A Lover's Moods' his skill is equally displayed in a sequence from Dedication to Epilogue of in all fifty-six sonnets. This in itself is a signal achievement; should it lead to comparison with similar work-by Meredith in 'Modern Love' or Rossetti's 'House of Life'—the result will not be disparagement, but ensure a high place being assigned to 'A Lover's Moods.' Imagination and fancy blend in the poet's Moods,' a record of experience dedicated to one 'Whom once I fondly dream'd to make mine own,' 'Their inspirer and their theme,' Bertram Dobell's posthumously published work is thus objective, not an impersonal or subjective creation. "Tis not my will that loves thee even now, but I myself,' boldly avers the poet, 'A free will must be free to love or hate, but mine to love thee was predestinate.' The sonnets are compact with thought, as well as suffused with passion; there are many memorable lines, but the following epigrammatic couplet must suffice as an example: 'Great natures by their nobleness efface the small defects that the small soul disgrace.' Our poet ends his record conscious that he has indeed grown old, that the fire of life is dying down, but confessing, 'I feel that it was well that thus I felt the power of love's strange spell.' And to that spell we owe his crowning work."

Some Seventeenth Century Allusions to Shakespeare

NOT HITHERTO COLLECTED.

This is a collection of allusions and references to Shakespeare to be found in books printed before the year 1700. The search for seventeenth century allusions to Shakespeare is a fascinating one, and the quest is still far from complete. This gives a large number of allusions not contained in Mr. A. J. Munro's edition of The Shakespere Allusion Book.

SHORTLY WILL BE PUBLISHED.

Esq.

BOOKS from the LIBRARY of the late H. F. HOUSE. The first 401 lots in this catalogue were formerly in the Library of the late H F. HOUSE, Esq. Mr. House was in the Indian Civil Service from 1882 to 1911. He died suddenly at the Charing Cross Hotel on 3rd March, 1923, and owing to the absence of any of his friends or relatives at the inquest the Coroner made some rather uncalled-for remarks, suggesting eccentricity and saying that Mr. House was 'possibly one of the loneliest men on the face of the earth." Public attention was again called to Mr. House and his Library when the provisions of his will were made public, for it was found that he had left instructions that all his manuscripts and the editions of Shakespeare's Works which he had annotated were to be destroyed— instructions which have been faithfully carried out. Mr. House's Shakespearean studies were mainly concerned with the text of the dramatist, and it was during his sojourn in India that he devoted himself to this part of his literary work-his method being to take an edition of Shakespeare's Works and fill the margins with an amazing number of emendations and textual notes. From his retirement in 1911 until his death in 1923 he devoted himself chiefly to bibliographical researches and to the collection of the library which he left behind. His ambition was to form a complete collection of all the Plays published down to the end of the seventeenth century. Considering how rare the early plays have become, he attained a fair measure of success, as an examination of Messrs. Sotheby's Sale Catalogue will prove. The dispersal occupied four days—viz.: January 21st to 24th, 1924.
