ELIZABETHAN MANUSCRIPTS AND DOCUMENTS. Of recent years a good deal of attention has been given to the study of the peculiarities of Elizabethan handwriting, with a view to elucidating thereby some of the difficulties found in the text of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. Much valuable data has already been gathered in this field but much yet remains to be done. I have therefore grouped together these manuscripts and papers as they were all written during the lifetime of Shakespeare, and cannot fail to be of interest and value to anyone studying the caligraphy of his time.

1 BACON (Edward, died 1618; third son of Sir Nicholas Bacon, ancient of Gray's Inn), A.L.s., -p., folio, addressed to Mr. Nathaniel Bacon at Cockthorp, 13 Feb., 1594, refers to goods purchased for his brother, which he is sending, £1 1s

"My Ld. Greyes fyne is 3 hundreth pound and fyftie, whoe behaved himself verie stowtly wyesly and told a eloquent tale. His judges were verie fauorable towardes him both in countenants and wordes saving, Sr Thomas Smyth.'

The reference is no doubt to Arthur, 14th Lord Grey de Wilton, who, in 1573, was confined to the fleet for some months in consequence of a quarrel with Sir John Fortescue.

2 DAYE (Allan) Will of, made 21st Nov., 39th Elizabeth, contemporary copy, one page, large folio, 10s 6d
