As for James's Black Prince if you have discovered any merit therein I am glad, for the author is a good fellow, but I found the book exceedingly dull and consider him as the most splendid living example of restless mediocrity. Tragedy-Romance-History-Colonial Policy-he is all in the ring and I think he never hits his mark," &c.

"If I should go abroad for a few weeks in the summer, it would most likely be to Normandy and Bretagoe-and perhaps to the French Pyrenees. The country which of all others I should most like to see will never be tranquil or safe for travellers in our time. Should my spirits fail for a foreign expedition, I may possibly turn my thoughts to Wales, see what we had designed to see, when I was called away from Llangadock in 1801, and the greater part of South Wales," &c.

In another letter Mrs. Southey mentions Madame D'Arblay's diary, 15s

"Have you had Mde. D'Arblays Diary in your bach. club? A most alluring gossipping book, when she can forget for a moment that she is the Authoress of 'Evelina'-That spiteful review of it in the Q.R.-is Croker's, written in revenge for her refusal to give him some anecdotes and letters of Johnson's which he wanted when getting his edn. ready. I have this from my old friend Sarah Burney-the 'little Sarah' of the diary-now on the wrong side of 70," &c.

A LOVER'S MOODS.

A SONNET SEQUENCE by the late BERTRAM DOBELL.

Handsomely printed at the Shakespeare Head Press, on Abbey Mill Paper. "In A Century of Sonnets' (1910) Bertram Dobell exhibited a mastery in the most exacting form of poetic expression, and in A Lover's Moods' his skill is equally displayed in a sequence from Dedication to Epilogue of in all fifty-six sonnets. This in itself is a signal achievement; should it lead to comparison with similar work-by Meredith in 'Modern Love' or Rossetti's 'House of Life'-the result will not be disparagement, but ensure a high place being assigned to 'A Lover's Moods.'”—The Newspaper World, January 19th, 1924
