Messrs. Ticknor, Reed and Fields, have an unusually choice list of books in the press and in preparation. They announce two new volumes by Nathaniel Hawthorne; the one, a new volume of Tales, the other, a "Wonder Book for Girls and Boys," consisting of ancient myths, melted and refined in the fire of Hawthorne's genius, and recast with all those adornments which mark every thing touched by his hand :-also, a new series of Greenwood Leaves and "Recollections

The meeting of the Alumni (no public Orator being yet announced) takes place on Wednesday morning; the Theological department have their commencement, and the Literary Societies their general meetings in the afternoon; and the Phi Beta Kappa Oration and Poem are delivered in the evening, the former by DANIEL LORD, Esq, of New-York; and the latter by ALFRED B. STREET, of Albany.
Thursday morning and afternoon, the 31st inst., are devoted to the commencement exercises,-the graduates and invited guests dining together as usual during the intermission.
At a recent meeting of the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences, C. S. Lyman and William A. Hillhouse, Esqs., were appointed a committee to prepare the so-called "Pendulum Experiment," for exhibiting the motion of the Earth. Better persons for the purpose could scarcely anywhere be found, and the skill with which these gentlemen made the preparations was attended with most gratifying success. State House for their place of operations, they were length, in a position entirely free from currents of air. able to make use of a pendulum about seventy feet in This position, and the nicety of their apparatus, combined to give the highest accuracy to the experiment, and the results were not only strictly in accordance with the theory, but were on such a scale as to be clearly seen by all the many spectators who from day to day attended the curious exhibition.
The CHURCH REVIEW for July, has just appeared, containing a commendatory criticism on the poet Wordsworth, a biographical sketch of the late Dr. Jarvis, and the usual variety of articles on subjects within the peculiar province of the Review, including a paper by Rev. Dr. Hawks, in continuation of the series which on American Ecclesiastical History, which is furnished he commenced some time ago.

THE SERPENT SYMBOL, and the Worship of the Recip- rocal Principles of Nature in America. By E. G. SQUIER. New-York: G. P. Putnam. 8vo. pp. 254.
This will be a welcome book to all who are interested in the study of the older religions of the earth, and in tracing their affinities. It is especially valuable as il- lustrating those forms of theological conception which $5,0 have left their record upon the aboriginal monu 25,00 ments scattered throughout the Western continent. This is a second edition of Mr Sherburne's work.
thought advisable to change the time of its publication from the 1st to the 15th of the month. We could thus render the catalogue of American Works published during the preceding month, much more accurate and complete, and could also bring down the contents of most American Magazines and Reviews one month later than formerly. This change has, by giving us six weeks interim, thrown upon our hands a large sion as a Captain in the Navy of the United States. amount of matter in the way of English and American Publications, filling up our pages to an unusual extent. This shall be guarded against in future, even at the expense of our advertising columns. We mention it to account for the non-appearance of much matter pre- pared for this number; more particularly the lists of New Works, Magazines and Newspapers sent in to us, and the Contents of Periodicals, under which latter head we had introduced some of a purely scientific nature.
It is composed principally of original documents, illus- trating the career and vindicating the character of one who is in some respects the most famous of our naval heroes, and who was the first to unfurl the free flag of our country. The present volume contains a portrait of John Paul, and a fac-simile of his original commis-
THE AMERICAN COTTON SPINNER, AND MANAGER'S AND CARDER'S GUIDE. Compiled from the papers of the late Robt. H. Baird. 252 pp. 12mo. (Phila. A. Hart.) The name of Baird is intimately associated with Ame- rican Cotton Spinning from its earliest infancy. The present work, compiled from notes of the late Robt. H. Baird, with additions by a surviving friend, relates to every department of the work up to the fin-
thorough treatise attempted, but the hints are all of them of practical value, nor can he who will neither buy nor read a full treatise-a Herculean task-any where find so much valuable matter ready to his hand.
The requirements of the New Postage Law, combin-ished. No drawings of machines are given, and no ed with our determination to reuder this paper some what more than a mere advertising sheet, have com. pelled us to affix to it the price of one dollar per annum. Private individuals, therefore, receiving this number, and desiring the work continued to them, will please remit the above amount, and the paper will be sent, postage paid.
We feel assured by the opinions freely expressed to us, that those to whom such intelligence as we herein give is of any interest, will not feel disobliged by our course, but on the contrary, be the first to coincide with this arrangement.
Constructors and managers of machinery driven by water or steam for other purposes, will find enough in the book applicable to their wants to pay them well for a perusal.
One announcement in the work would fill us with "A very ingenious con- joy could we only believe it. trivance has been invented, which, when properly con- structed, will counteract the causes of irregularity; and the engine of a large factory, so regulated, will move, with regard to the uniformity of its motion, like clock- work." If the inventor can convince us of this, we
THE TRADE SALES.-From present appearance the approaching Trade Sales will be very well attended, and large quantities of Books sold. As will be noticed would be happy to own our incredulity vanquished. by advertisements, the Sale of Messrs. Lyman & Raw- don commences on the 3d, and that of Messrs. Bangs, Bro. & Co., on the 8th, of September. We trust that our friends and patrons in the Trade will favor us with their orders as early as possible. It is very inconve- nient to all parties, to have Books added to the bill after the sale is over. Commissions as heretofore, on purchases to the amount of $500 or less, 5 per cent; over $500, 3 per cent.
THE NEW POSTAGE LAW.-This Law has certainly one merit, which is, that BOUND Books can be sent by Mail to any part of the Country. We are ready to sup- ply all orders, accompaniedy the cash, for American or Foreign Works, which will be sent carefully envelop- ed and the Postage paid.
OUR readers will notice by the advertisement of Messrs. Lyman & Rawdon, that the large and valuable Library of the late Dr. Jarvis, is to be brought to the hammer, affording Bibliophiles a treat never before en joyed in this Country. Any gentleman wishing Cata- logues of the Sale seat to them, by forwarding their ad- dress, postage paid, to our office, shall receive them as soon as issued.
All orders for purchasing at that, or any other Book Sale, carefully attended to.
WHITEHURST'S GALLERY.-An advertisement of this establishment will be found in another column. It is probably one of the largest and most perfect Da- guerreian Galleries in the world, and contains a collec tion of Portraits of noted individvals that will well repay a protracted visit.
Mr. Whitehurst is untiring in his exertions to perfect the Daguerreian Art, and has reached a point where there seems little room for further improvement. His pictures are universally admired.
THE ROMAN REPUBLIC OF 1849, with accounts of the Inquisition and Siege of Rome; with original por- traits. By Theodore Dwight. New-York: Van Dien. 12mo. 240 pp.
The rise and fall of the Roman Republic of 1849, adds another chapter to the World's History. It is a
brief one of unusual interest, not only as associated with the remains of the mightiest military power and with the greatest spiritual power the world ever saw, but intrinsically, developing new and very unexpected phases in the Italian character, and giving us new hopes for the progress of liberty. No one but Mr. Dwight has entered this field; and no American-no author fami- liar with American institutions, will or can be found better qualified to occupy it than Mr. Dwight. He has spent much time in Italy, and spent it well. Previous to the amnesty of Pius IX., every exile from Italy for freedom's sake, found in him a friend and an eager watchman for the dawn of liberty. So too, since again the friends of light have been driven forth. The work before us then is drawn from original and highly au- thentic sources. Our only regret is that his work is so brief. A couple of octavo volumes surely might pro- fitably be occupied with so pregnant a theme. Mean- while this little book remains without a rival, and no historical library can be complete without it.
FAMILIAR SCIENCE; or, the Scientific Explanation of Common Things. Edited by R. E. Peterson, mem- ber of the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia. 12mo. pp. 558. (R. E. Peterson, publisher, Phil.)
A well got up book, designed for Schools, with clear type and good paper, and substantially bound. It comes to us with numerous recommendations from practical Teachers of the highest repute.

CHANGES AMONG THE TRADE.
Mr. James E. Cooley, (formerly Cooley & Keese,) of this city, has retired from the Book Auction and Trade Sale Business, leaving it to his successors Messrs. Lyman & Rawdon, who purpose carrying it on in the same manner as heretofore. Mr. John Keese has been happily retained as auctioneer. (See their ad- vertisement, page 24.)
Mr. Andrew Davidson, formerly with Messrs. Robert Carter & Bros., New-York, is about establishing him- self under the auspices of this well known house at Louisville, Kentucky. A Depot for Theological Works more particularly, will thus be established in the West-the lack of which has been much felt. Having known Mr. Davidson long and most favora- bly-we cannot but wish him large success. The firm of John M. Cooper, Savannah, has been changed to John M. Cooper & Co.; Mr. Cooper hav ing associated with himself Messrs. Wm, H. Olcott & Edwin Knapp.
NOTE.-Among the changes in our last number, we inadvertently altered the No. of Mr. Anson D, F. Ran- dolph's new store to 697 Broadway. It should have been 669 Broadway.
