O one can doubt the importance of the
subject chosen for this course of sermons; as to the mode of treatment it must be borne in mind, that, although by printing they are practically reduced to essays, still after all they are sermons, and that the topics discussed and the method of discussion have been very much determined by the conditions which are imposed by pulpit delivery. I say this, because the comprehensive title of this little volume might lead readers to expect a much more complete and systematic treatment of the subject than they will in reality find.
