APPENDIX.

Containing miscellaneous questions in Logarithms and Mensuration.

THE following list of numerical constants will be found useful for reference.

(1) Logarithms of the first few prime numbers.

log 2=3010300.

log 3=4771213.

log 7=8450980.

log 11=1.0413927.

log 13-11139434.

log 17=1.2304489.

When certain logarithms are given in any question, no other logarithms should be used in the solution.

(2) Approximate square roots.

√/2=1414.

√/3=1.732.

(3) Approximations to functions of π.

T=3.141592653....

but for all practical purposes it is sufficient to take π=3·1416, and this value will always be taken unless the contrary is expressly stated in the question.

It is useful to notice that 31416-8 × 3 × 7 × 11 × 17.

COMPOUND INTEREST.

If M is the amount of P pounds in n years, then M=PR", where R=1+r, and r is the interest on one pound for one year at the given rate per cent.
