Republics of Ideas: Republicanism, Culture, Visual Arts

Examines the social, political and cultural implications of an Australian republic in the context of the visual arts and the new global economy. Collection of essays based on forums held at Artspace Visual Arts Centre in the lead-up to the 1999 Australian Republican referendum. Investigates areas of cultural identity, the role of contemporary arts and criticism in our society and the importance of Indigenous voices in the new cultural and political republic. Includes notes on contributors, endnotes, bibliography and index. Buckley is an Associate Professor in the Sydney College of the Artsat the University of Sydney. Conomos is a media artist, critic and writer and currently a New Media Fellow of the Australia Council.
