MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, illuminated throughout with borders of
Pen-Tracery (with gilded leaves, coloured flowers and foliage) and
numerous capital letters (the initials of the several Hours being
very rich and beautifully painted). The Calendar is written in gold,
azure and crimson, with three-side borders, in which are depicted
24 Miniatures (representing the signs of the Zodiac and the occupa-
tions for the different Months) of great merit and beauty. In
addition this beautiful MS. which is unfortunately imperfect, is
ornamented with 4 large and 17 small MINIATURES, finely illu-
minated in gold and colours, and highly finished with great pictorial
skill, red velvet, g. e.

This beautiful Manuscript was purchased 1st March, 1850, and
described as "An exquisite illuminated Missal, of the finest period
of the art, with forty-six miniatures and rich arabesque borders.
This beautiful Missal belonged to Mary (sister of Henry VIII),
Dowager Queen of France, and Duchess of Suffolk. Her autograph
is on the first leaf. It was purchased at the sale of the Duchess of
Portland's celebrated Collection." With regard to this autograph, see
Sir W. Tite's Lecture on illuminated Manuscripts, in which this volume
is described. He says: "On a leaf opposite the commencement
appears the name of Marie de Suff' intended for that of Mary Tudor,
daughter of Henry VII, Queen-Dowager of France, and third wife of
Charles Brandon, Fourth Duke of Suffolk, but it is no doubt a fictitious

MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, by an Italian Scribe, ornamented with
exquisitely illuminated borders (composed of flowers, fruits, birds,
including Peacock, and insects), painted in brilliant colours on gold
ground. Besides there are 3 others representing the gothic entrances
and ornaments of ecclesiastical buildings painted" En Camaieu d'Or"
on azure back grounds. The Calendar-borders contain 24 small
Miniatures representing the signs of the Zodiac and the occupations
of the several Months. At the end are 8 historiated initial letters,
in which are painted the effigies of the Saints to whom the Suffrage-
Prayers are addressed: red morocco, g. e. in a morocco case

From the library of Thomas Windus, F.S.A. who has written on the
first leaf, "From the Library of the late Cardinal York the last of the
Stuarts A.D. 1808," and has added at end a fine impression from the
Seal of Mary Queen of Scots.
MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, an exquisite Specimen of Flemish art,
gorgeously adorned with numerous CAPITAL LETTERS, elegant
BORDERS of Pen-Tracery (with gilded leaves, coloured flowers and
foliage) and SUPERB MINIATURES of very great excellence, several
of which are surrounded by broad and beautiful borders, additionally
ornamented with historiated initial letters and groups of figures
relating to the paintings, green morocco extra, dentelle borders, silk
linings, g. e. by Derome, lettered "Heures MSS. du 15° Siècle de
la plus grande Beauté "

This exquisite gem is fully described in Sir W. Tite's Lectures on
illuminated Manuscripts, and the merits of the volume with its 11 large
Miniatures, Borders and Calendar, historiated with small paintings,
have ample justice rendered to them.

This Manuscript formerly belonged to QUEEN MARGARET OF VALOIS,
wife of Henry IV, the binding being covered with gold tooling repre-
senting the various devices she was fond of displaying on her books,
including the Daisy (Marguerite), unicorn, bee, sun, $ (signifying
Fermesse), &c. &c.
