This drama is supposed to have suggested to Milton the idea of
writing his Paradise Lost. It is so rare, that Mickle, the translator
of the Lusiad, on the authority of eminent Italian literati, denied that
such an author or work existed. Edwards's copy sold for £15.

FIFTEENTH CENTURY, COMPRISING A SERIES OF FORTY-EIGHT
WOOD ENGRAVINGS, ILLUSTRATING THE MOST REMARKABLE POR-
TIONS OF THE REVELATION OF ST. JOHN, with descriptive block
text interspersed among the designs, the whole worked off on 24 sheets
on one side only, dark morocco extra, g. e. in the antique style by
Lortic
small folio. circa 1420
Purchased by Sir W. Tite on 17th June, 1858. In the catalogue of
the sale this copy was described by Mr. Sotheby thus: "This is the
edition described by Heinecken (pp. 367, &c.) as the Edition de
Gotwic,' one which he considered to have surpassed in antiquity all
others, though he had previously (pp. 334, &c.) described the edition
I have ventured to place as the Fifth of the work, to be the first
edition; observing, me paroit être la plus ancienne et veritablement la
première.'

Of the present edition, Heinecken found an imperfect copy in the library
of the Abbey of Gotwic, which in describing, he called, as mentioned,
l'Edition de Gotwic,' adding,' qui si je ne me trompe, surpasse pour
son antiquité toutes les précédentes.'

I have ventured to place it as the Sixth edition. The Block Text is
rather of a smaller size, but the Designs are almost facsimiles of the
Fifth edition, of which a copy is in the Bodleian Library. In all the

preceding editions, only one alphabet occurs by way of signatures for
the arrangement of the designs, each sheet in those editions having
one letter. In the present edition, however, there are two alphabets,
each leaf in lieu of each sheet, bearing a signature; thus, leaf 1 to 23
inclusive, is marked A to Z, with a single letter, except T being double;
and from plate 24 to 48 inclusive, with a double A A to ZZ.
In vol. I, p. 24, of my Principia Typographica, I have particularly referred
to the edition, and in vol. II, pp. 50, a & b, as also vol. III, p. 185, I
have had occasion to notice the identical copy now offered for sale.
It came from the Collection of M. T. Weigel of Leipsic, and was sold by
M. Tross, with the Library of J. B. Chevalier de Bearzi at Paris in
1855, being then purchased at a large sum for M. Pioche the Banker.
The pages are all coloured in the usual style of the Block Books. The
backs of the leaves are firmly pasted together, and between the designs
are leaves with a German manuscript descriptive text, the writing
being of a few years later than the book itself, is shewn by the paper
mark of the anchor within a circle.

AS A SPECIMEN OF THE BLOCK BOOKS IT IS MOST DESIRABLE, BEING IN
