at large, as to obtain the means needed to secure the assistance whereby not merely the present work can be kept up, but its natural development carried on; more stations established, both in Philadelphia and in the country, and more frequent visits paid to those already started. STATISTICS. In connection with this subject I submit a table of the number of Deaf-Mutes in our district by Dioceses, Convocations and Counties. The figures for this class by the census of 1880, have not yet been received; these are estimated on the proportion, 1 Deaf-Mute in 1500 population, which is generally correct, though liable to disturbance from local causes, e. g., the tendency to go from the country to the great cities like Philadelphia, and the prevalence of "black fever" in the Northeast. This shows nearly 2000 Deaf-Mutes within about 100 miles of Philadelphia. The pleasing duty remains, of expressing my warm personal acknowledgments to yourself, sir, and the other members of the Commission, especially the friend who has so kindly and energetically discharged the duties of Secretary and Treasurer. Very respectfully, your Missionary, HENRY WINTER SYLE. 1881. Pennsylvania Diocesan Commission on Church Work Among Deaf-Mutes. DR. CR. 1881.
