THREE especial claims may be made for these Poetic Readers. First, the Editor has aimed at excluding from them all poems which, so far as he can find out, have already appeared in School Readers; so that the present work really forms a series of what are, in view of the main purpose, substantially new poems. A teacher who may wish to find any of the older and more familiar pieces, included as we may say in nearly all Readers, will not have any difficulty in finding what he wants to supplement this one should it be deemed desirable. Secondly, the idea of an arrangement, which should present sections fitted for each of the Standards, from the infants' up to the highest, has not, as the Editor believes, been hitherto attempted in anything like the arrangement he has followed in this instance; and he has been bold enough to credit the bulk of boys and girls of twelve and thirteen under a good teacher, with the capacity to learn |
