INTRODUCTION.

Although the French do not enjoy in this country the reputation which the English travellers have obtained, yet have they to boast of some very enterprising individuals, who have traversed distant regions, and discovered new countries. The name of the lamented PÉROUSE is as familiar in our ears, and in the ears of all Europe, as the venerated and wonder-waking name of Captain Cook. The voyages of D'ENTRECASTEAUX, who was sent in search of PEROUSE, form a very interesting portion of works on this subject. Among the first of modern travellers, we should place the name of HUMBOLDT. "Nothing" says Dibdin, seems too vast, too varied, too wonderful, or too minute for the keen eye, penetrating intellect, and unwearied exertions of this extraordinary man." Next in importance, we think, stands the wellknown CAILLIAUD. We would then recommend the labours of MALTE-BRUN, as likely to afford considerable information, on subjects connected with Geography; and we need only mention the name of DENON, to remind our readers of all the interest which is attached to his scientific and elegant productions.

"In conclusion we do not hesitate to declare it as our opinion, that the press has not for many years, produced a work better adapted than the present, to communicate useful information to young persons, in a manner at once amusing and instructive. We must not forget to remind the reader, that the Abbé Barthélémy authenticates every material circumstance, by references to all the principal ancient writers, historians, philosophers, poets, &c."-Monthly Review, vol. 6, p. 91.

"The Voyage d'Anarchisis is one of those classic productions which have shed the greatest lustre on the literature of the eighteenth century."-Revue Ency. vol. 2, p. 496.-See BARTHELEMY, Euvres Complètes.
