This edition, printed by J. Didot, is like the former, entitled to commendation on account of its execution, but it does not possess like it, the advantage of containing the anatomical descriptions of Daubenton.

This supplement to all the editions of Buffon is announced as likely to consist of 10 vols. 8vo. and an atlas, of 120 plates, to be published in 20 parts.

CHAMFORT (Séb. Roch. Nic.)

Ses Œuvres, recueillies et publiées par un de de ses amis [Ginguené,] avec une Notice sur la vie et les écrits de l'auteur. Paris, an iii. (1795) 4 vols. 8vo.

This edition was the first published, purporting to contain the whole of Chamfort's works; it does not however contain, Le Discours qui a remporté le prix à l'Académie de Marscilles.

-Les mémes. Edition revue, corrigée et précédée d'une Notice sur sa vie, extraite de celle de Ginguené, par M. Colnet, et augmentée de son Discours sur l'influence du génie des grands écrivains sur l'esprit de leur siècle. Paris, Colnet, 1808, 2 vols. 8vo. and Paris, Maradan, 1812, 2 vols. 8vo.

Although this edition contains a Discours more than that

published by Ginguené, it is however, by no means so valuable as the following:

Les Mêmes, recueillies et publiées avec une notice historique sur la vie et les écrits de l'auteur, par P. R. Anguis. Paris, Chaumerot jeune, 1824-25, 5 vols. 8vo.

This edition, the most complete of Chamfort's works, besides those which found a place in the former editions, contains many that had never appeared with his name; also his Notes to the fables of La Fontaine, and under the title of Mélanges de Littérature et d'Histoire, the articles he furnished to the Mercure.

Chamfort was a man very largely gifted with Esprit, and among the whole of his productions, there is probably not one that can be called ennuyeux, except the tragedy of Mustapha et Zeangir, which was written to flatter Louis XVI, it being an allusion to the friendship which existed, or was supposed to exist, between the monarch and his brothers, the Counts of Provence and of Artois. The anecdotes of the society in which Chamfort passed the evening, and which on his return home he noted down on the back of a playing card, are extremely amusing, and the style in which they are written, comes nearer in piquaney, to the lighter productions of Voltaire than any thing we have had of a similar nature since. Chamfort composed several of the speeches which Mirabeau pronounced from the tribune, He put an end to his existence. during the reign of terror, This edition of his works is worthy of occupying a place in the library of every lover of French Literature."-New Monthly Mag. vol. 15, p. 484.

CHATEAUBRIAND (Le Vicomte F. A. de),

Euvres complètes. Paris, Ladvocat, 1826, et années suivantes, 8vo.

The publication of this, the first edition of the complete works of M. de Chateaubriand, is rapidly advancing to its close, and of the 30 volumes of which it is to consist, more than 20 have already appeared (March, 1829.) Besides the principal works of the author, such as his Atala, Génie du Christianisme, Essai sur les Révolutions, &c. it will contain the numerous political pamphlets of the author, several pieces that have not as yet appeared, under the author's name, and some that are now published for the first time. For the materials which compose this edition, M. Ladvocat is said, by the French papers, to have paid the enormous sum of 550,000 francs.
