EFORE Chriftianity appeared in the World, there reigned in Bohemia a King, named Pandofto, who was married to a Princefs of exquifite Beauty and confummate: Virgue, calJed Bellaria. The Harmony that fubfifted between this royal Couple. gave the greatest Satisfaction to all their Subjects, whofe Happinefs was greatly increated by the Felicity of their Sovereigas.:

At the End of the firft Year of their Marriage Bellaria was delivered of a Son, who was named Garrinter. The Bohemians upon VOL. II. B

this Occafion made great Rejoicings over all the Kingdom. And the King, as well to exprefs his own Satisfaction at this happy Incident, as to comply with the Defires of the People, appointed Jufts and Tournaments in Honour of the young Prince; to which not only many foreign Noblemen reforted, but alfo feveral neighbouring Kings and Princes came to exercife their Valour and Judgment at these martial Entertainments.

The Sports lafted twenty Days, during which Time the King made a general Feaft for all his Subjects; and the Kings and Prin ces, who had been royally entertained, returned home to their refpective Countries, full of Admiration of the great Magnificence of Pandofto.

The Smiles of Fortune are feldom fincere or lafting; the fickle Goddefs, weary of beftowing Favours upon Pandofto, while he was wholly taken up in the Enjoyment of them, prepared a fad reverfe of Fate for him and the lovely Bellaria, Pandafto, from his earliest Youth, had contracted and maintained a strict Friendship and Correfcondence with Egiftus, the young King of

This Prince being defrous of fhewing that neither Time.ior Diflante of Place could weaken the Force of his Affection for Pandefto, refolved to vifit him in his own Dominions, to congratulate him upon his Marriage and the Birth of a Son. For this Purpose he ordered a fmall Fleet to be prepared, and with a small
