First edition. Probably a unique copy, with the exceedingly rare engraved title, the date of which has been altered by a pen from 1637 to 1638, and the printed title, also; the cancelled preliminary leaf A3, and the substituted leaf correctly marked A4, also the cancelled signature I (four leaves), I,i and I,3 incorrectly marked Ki and K3, and signature K correctly marked.

These variations appear to have been hitherto overlooked by bibliographers. The Huth catalogue says, "In a copy of this book sold in 1817, the date on the engraved title (the printed one being deficient) was altered with a pen to 1638, a circumstance which led to the erroneous supposition that there were two quarto editions." Hazlitt says, Mr. Heber's copy had not the frontispiece, and Mr. Corser's wanted the printed title.

Collation: Engraved frontispiece-title representing a feast of the gods. Jupiter sits at the left of the table, crowned, grasping a thunderbolt, and accompanied by his eagle. Venus embraced by Cupid sits in the middle background. At the right is Juno, crowned, with her peacock perched on her chair, and attended by Pan piping, and Bacchus, crowned with grapes and bearing a goblet of wine. Vulcan with his hammer in his belt, bears aloft a dish, in the right foreground. Advancing towards him, hand in hand, are the winged Mercury, with his magic wand, and Hebe. Apollo, laurel-crowned, is playing the lyre behind Jupiter's chair,—one leaf (verso blank). Printed title in a narrow ornamental border, and with two transverse bands, A1 (verso blank).
