£20. One of the most magnificent books on the Art-Monuments of Spain, and probably superior to any other in the accuracy and learning of its author. The series of illustrations was selected from works of art which were excellent by reason of their historical character or the beauty of their execution. Only 275 copies were printed, of which about 150 were absorbed by subscribers amongst the aristocracy of Spain. The book may therefore be regarded as virtually unpublished, and as likely before long, in consequence of its intrinsic worth and the short supply of copies, to become a costly rarity.

"His great work, the ‘Iconografía Española,' published in 1853 and 1864, contains seventyfour portraits, statues, and mausoleums,' dating from the eleventh to the seventeenth centuries.' Not only the original drawings, but the text in Spanish and French, were his own work. Amongst the gems of this collection may be named the bas-reliefs of Charles V and his empress, attributed by Cean Bermudez to Pompey Leoni, and now in the Museum at Madrid; portraits of Philip II when young and in his old age; the unhappy Don Carlos, Don Juan de Austria, Philip's wives, and the famous one-eyed' Princess of Eboli. That of Hernan Cortés is exquisitely finished. He executed several copies of portraits after Goya, which have never been published, notably that of the famous Andalusian beauty 'La Duquesa de Alva.' The mantilla, maja jacket, short black lace dress, silk stockings, and high-heeled shoes indicate the provincial costume of the duchess of the period' to perfection. That of Maria Luisa, the less beautiful and austere wife of Charles III, indicates Goya's character. He seems never to have flattered his sitters, even when nature had been gracious to them. Maria Luisa de Borbon, Duchess of San Fernando, figures in an empire dress, with a head-gear of feathers; and albeit nature had forgotten to favour her, the wayward artist painted her as she lived, plain and dowdy."Athenæum, April 10th, 1880.

Turkish Language :

REDHOUSE'S

ENGLISH-TURKISH

and

TURKISH-ENGLISH

Dictionary, new and enlarged edition, by Dr. CHARLES WELLS, PH.D., complete in two parts, forming one vol. 8vo. double columns (pub. at £2.), cloth, reduced to 258

1880

The first edition has been long entirely out of print; the few copies which have turned up oecasionally have been sold much above the original publishing price.

"Those who are interested in Turkish literature will be glad to learn that Redhouse's Turkish Dictionary, printed twenty-five years ago, having become exhausted, the publisher, Mr. Quaritch of Piccadilly, has determined on issuing a second edition, which will be revised and enlarged by Dr. Wells, who was for many years in the Turkish Government service as Professor of English, and who published an interesting collection of Turkish tales and poems some years since, under the title of 'Mehemet the Kurd, and other Tales from Eastern Sources.' Mr. Quaritch has also engaged Dr. Wells to write a Turkish Grammar, the want of which, since our Government has been brought into such close connection with Turkey, has been much felt, those which have hitherto existed being very scarce, extremely defective, and full of errors. The

above two works by Dr. Wells will be most
useful to those who may be called to live in
the East, but we would urge on the Govern-
ment the advisability of founding a Turkish
Professorship at one of our Universities and
appointing such a man as the author of these
books. There are Government professorships
of Turkish in Paris, Vienna, Pesth, and
St. Petersburg, but in England we have none,
although we are more interested in promoting
the cultivation of the Turkish language than
any European country. We may add that
Dr. Wells' Turkish Grammar will be dedicated,
by permission, to Lieutenant-General Sir
A. Kemball, K.C.B., whose private secretary
Dr. Wells was when the General represented
England on the Turco-Persian Boundary
Commission at Constantinople."
Opinion, May 10th, 1879.

WELLS (Dr. Charles) A PRACTICAL GRAMMAR of the TURKISH LANGUAGE, based upon the best modern Turkish work on the subject; also including such rules of Arabic and Persian Grammar as have been adopted by the Turks, 8vo. (pub. at 15s), cloth, reduced to 108 1880

This is the best Turkish Grammar ever written. The author's knowledge of the Turkish Language is exceptionally good and is only inferior to that possessed by One scholar, Mr. Redhouse.

The Saturday Review, October 18th, 1879, in reviewing a new Turkish Manual, says :-" It is scarcely likely to fill the place which is still open for a thorough Anglo-Turkish Grammar and Reading Book." I trust that DR. WELLS'S TURKISH GRAMMAR, now ready, does supply this want. "Dr. Wells's Turkish Grammar is a useful manual of acquiring the Ottoman tongue as spoken in Constantinople, and contains numerous exercises for translation from English into that language. It is an improvement on most of the preceding grammars, inasmuch as it is written on the same lines as the most approved manuals for the study of modern European languages."

Redhouse's large Turkish Dictionaries:

ATURKISH and ENGLISH LEXICON; shewing in English the signification of the Turkish terms; by Sir James W. Redhouse, hf. bd. £3. 10s

Constantinople, printed for the American Mission, 1890

An imperial 8vo. volume, containing 2224 pp. printed in double columns.

Indisputably the best and most complete work of its kind; superseding all the labours of previous writers. It is the fruit of fifteen years' incessant toil by the man who has no rival in or out of the Ottoman empire as a master of the Turkish language.

A Lexicon ENGLISH and TURKISH, by J. W. Redhouse, in one volume, royal 8vo. 827 pp. double columns, hf. morocco, £2. 28

London, Bernard Quaritch, 1861

This is the counterpart of the great Turkish-English Lexicon above mentioned, and is the most complete and useful of all English-Turkish Dictionaries. It is even found to be indispensable as an English-Persian Dictionary by those who are employed in the English diplomatic service in Persia, notwithstanding the excellence of other recent works specially devoted to their use. DR. CHARLES WELLS, the Literature of the Turks :

A TURKISH CHRESTOMATHY, 8vo. xx. and 272 pp., cloth, 16s 1891 The first Turkish Reading book ever published, consisting of Extracts in Turkish from the best Turkish Authors (Historians, Novelists, Dramatists), with interlinear and free translations in English, biographical and grammatical notes and Facsimiles of MS. Letters and Documents.

"This is the first good Turkish reading book which has been published in England, and it will be welcomed by all students of Turkish as a valuable addition to the books available for learning that language. Dr. Wells, who is Professor of Turkish in the School of Modern Oriental Languages founded by the Imperial Institute, and is author of an excellent Turkish Grammar, published by Quaritch in 1880, has taken great pains to make this Chrestomathy as complete as possible and of graduated difficulty, commencing with easy sentences, and going on to selections from some of the best Turkish authors. Translations of each piece are given for the assistance of students who have to work without a teacher."--United Service Journal.

The grand and picturesque effects of this great master of the school of English Landscape Painters are powerfully exhibited in this, which, after the Liber Studiorum, may be considered his finest work. The engravings were executed by the best English Artists, and possess all the fidelity to nature of the original drawings. Collectors of really fine works of art should lose no time in securing copies, as they will soon disappear from the market.

The original edition, one of the earliest books printed in India, is of extreme rarity.
