"Between the first appearance of Gerard's Herbal and the second edition,
Parkinson had published his Paradisi in Sole Paradisus Terrestris, the most popular
gardening work of this period.

"The title of the book is a play upon his name: Park-in-Sun's Earthly Paradise,
and the quaintness, freshness, and originality of the title is characteristic of the whole
book. Parkinson has the power of inspiring his readers with a love of flowers and a
feeling for their beauty, and still, after a lapse of centuries, no gardener could fail to
be refreshed and stimulated in his art by a perusal of the Earthly Paradise.

"The feeling that this book might inspire in children is very prettily shown in
Mary's Meadow by Juliana Horatia Ewing."-The Hon. Alicia Amherst.

104 SARGENT (C. S.) Notes on the Forest Flora of Japan. Uniform in

illustrated
New York, 1896

In the autumn of 1892 Professor Sargent visited Japan, and in a journey through
Hondo and Yezo made notes of the forests which fell under his notice. These notes he
has amplified and arranged, and he presents them to the public in a form extremely
attractive to all who appreciate scientific and artistic work. America could study
the forests of Japan through no eyes keener to observe and with no mind more
thoroughly competent to report than Professor Sargent's, and we are fortunate in
having a part of the forest flora of Japan described for us by the masterly skill
which is rearing the monumental work on "The Silva of North America." It is
fortunate, also, that his Notes are illustrated and supplemented by twenty-six
admirable pictures of the trees of Japan. Notes and Illustrations combine to produce
a work exceedingly satisfactory, and, within its local limits, a permanent and most
beautiful record of the forest flora of Japan. This work possesses special interest
and value for those persons who import, for ornamental use, trees and shrubs from
Japan.
