Paris, Quantin, 1894

Written in French and probably the first book published with illustrations of mediæval Cyprus inscriptions; this work is a supplement, compiled on the spot, to Du Cange's Familles d'Outre-mer. The 29 plates by Mr. W. Griggs reproduce 290 slabs or fragments, many with inscriptions in Latin, French and Greek, from the 13th to the 16th centuries.

The English names of Neville, with their quarterings-fielty-Prevost, and Norris, occur, and in the second volume will appear under the title of de Soissons, the arms of the house of Berkeley, as borne by Earl Berkeley, Viscount Portman, and the Earl of Kimberley.

160 CHARLES V. HOGENBERG (Nic.) Procession of Pope Clement VII

The plates shew the vestments of the Ecclesiastic, the armour of the Noble, the coiffure and robes of the grande dame, the habit of the Nun, and the costume of the mediaval doctor and burgess, as worn in the Eastern Mediterranean 500 years ago.

The original edition of very GREAT RARITY. It is identical with the copy used by Sir Wm. Stirling Maxwell in his reproduction of the work, which he, after great study of the subject, believed to be the FIRST EDITION.

161 CHARLES V. AMPLISSIMO HOC APPARATU et pulchro ordine POMPA FUNEBRIS BRUXELLIS a Palatio ad divæ Gudulæ templum processit, cum rex Hispaniarum Philippus CAROLO V ROM. IMP. parenti moestissimus justa solveret, oblong atlas folio, 37 coloured plates of the procession, as described below, half bound

The inscriptions in the ornamental wreaths are in French. Sir William could only trace five perfect copies of this issue, three of which were two inches shorter than the one here described. The reprint by Hondius is described in the second article below.

and of the Emperor at the Coronation of Charles V at Bologna,
March 24th, 1530, the complete series of 40 engraved plates (the first
and last of which consist of laudatory verses, brilliant impressions,
mounted on silk and forming a long roll 16 in. high and about 41 feet
long, in a box
Antwerp (circ. 1536) 60 00

The excessive rarity of these plates arises from their having served to ornament
the walls of houses, public places, etc. In consequence, nearly the whole have been
destroyed.

Hagae-Comit. (1559) Henricus Hondius, 1619 25 00

The plates of the procession joined together would form one large plate thirtythree feet in length.

In 1877 Sir Wm. Stirling Maxwell paid £210 for a copy of the two works above described, both of which were imperfect.

If there is one place in the world less sentimental than another assuredly it is an auction room, where everything is regarded almost entirely from a commercial point of view. But what are mere commonplace events to one generation often possess the liveliest of interest, and even importance, to succeeding decades. This is especially the case with Christie's, where, for nearly a century and a quarter, most of the renowned works of art in this country-not to mention a large number now abroad— have come up for public sale.

The record of Christie's is absolutely unique in the chronicles of auction rooms, and its importance to students of the annals of art is unrivalled.
