919 VIOLLET-LE-Duc, Essay on the Military Architecture of the Middle Ages, in English, by Macdermott, Svo. illustrations, cloth Oxford, 1860 920 MURRAY'S NEW ENGLISH DICTIONARY, on historical principles, impl. 4to. complete as far as published; in parts

Oxford, the Clarendon Press, 1884-96 Each volume consists of four or five parts, published regularly at intervals in each year. The first volume contains A and B: the second is devoted to C, the letter iniating by far the largest percentage of words in our language of the third volume, dealing with D and E, four out of the five parts have been published, the fifth part being, we believe, now ready; and the fourth volume, dealing with F and G, will be published this year.

"It may be added that the completion of these letters is the completion of the heaviest part of the work--C alone being tantamount to five or six other letters. That such a work as this must necessarily progress slowly, and that it must involve great expense is obvious; but that it should be abandoned-for to reduce its scale and deprive it of its distinctive features is practically to abandon it-is surely not to be thought of for a moment. It has plainly been Dr. Murray's ambition to say, with his great predecessor and pioneer, Dr. Johnson, I have devoted this work, the labour of years, to the honour of my country, that we may no longer yield without a contest the palm of Philology to the nations of the Continent.”—Saturday Review, April 18th, 1896. 921 CANCIONERO MUSICAL de los Siglos XV y XVI, transcrito y
comentado por
FRANCISCO ASENJO BARBIERI. Roy. 4to. 230 pp. of
letterpress in double columns, and 384 pp. of lithographed Music, cloth
Madrid, 1890
This fine volume is the result of one of the most remarkable and interesting
discoveries made in our time. The single extant MS. formerly in the possession of
the Dukes of Alva, and written during the closing years of the fifteenth century and
the first decade or so of the sixteenth,―was found accidentally in 1870. It supplied
at once a vacuum which no one could ever have expected to see filled. Indeed, we
could only find a parallel to the value of its contents by imagining the discovery here
in England of a volume written in Henry VII's time furnishing the words and music
of 458 contemporary popular Ballads. Such a trouvaille is more than we may reason-
ably hope for; but in the meanwhile we can admire and enjoy the boon bestowed upon
Spain and the world in Mr. Barbieri's noble work.

922 GREGORIAN Music: an outline of Musical Palæography, 4to. illustrated
by 7 Facsimiles of ancient Manuscripts, cloth
923 KIDSON (F.) Traditional Tunes, being a collection of Ballad Airs,
chiefly obtained in Yorkshire and the south of Scotland, which it is
believed will be now for the first time printed; together with their
appropriate words from broadsides and from oral tradition, collected
and edited with illustrative notes, demy 8vo. cloth
1897

The above work consists of nearly a hundred of those quaint old ballads and
songs, formerly sung by singers in rural districts. Many such old-fashioned Lyrics are
remembered by elderly people, while others (the airs never having found their way
into print) are irrecoverably lost. It has been the wish of the Editor to rescue all he
could while a chance yet remained; and he has gathered together what he deems will
be an interesting collection of some value to the musical antiquary and to the student
of folk-lore. However trivial the words of this class of country ditties may be, the
airs are in general very beautiful, and have a quaintness and simplicity distinctly their
own. The Editor, bearing this in mind, has carefully and conscientiously noted down
the tunes exactly as they were sung to him, abstaining from tampering with or arranging
them.

959 MR. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies, published according to the true Originall Copies, THE FIRST FOLIO, a fine genuine impression of the Portrait on the title, red morocco extra, gilt edges, by Bedford 1623 500 00

A fine tall copy, measuring 123 by 83. The verses in facsimile, and a few leaves re-margined.

"A correspondent writes: In spite of its shortcomings, the First Folio Shakespeare must remain the richest of all our literary inheritances. It contains thirty-six plays, of seventeen of which there had been no previous edition, and of four of which the previous issues had been surreptitious. The volume was published by Isaac Jaggard and Edward Blount at £1--a sum which is now represented by about four figures. Of this edition, a large number-Steevens supposes it to have consisted of 250 copies-must have been printed, as it is still a comparatively common book, more or less mutilated. Fine copies in perfect condition are, however, of the greatest rarity, and occur in the market at long and irregular intervals.'

"It would have been a loss to the music of the world if the Welsh Airs had never come into existence, and that not only on account of their excellence, but because they have pecul arities which distinguish them from the Airs of other nations."-JOHN RHYS, Professor of Celtic, Oxford.

It will be produced in the best style as regards type, paper, and binding, by the eminent firm of Roder, London, and will be illustrated with a portrait of the celebrated John Parry (Blind Parry), domestic harper to the first and second Baronets of Wynnstay" that son of harmony who delighted the world" and of whom the poet Gray wrote from Cambridge to a friend-"Mr. Parry has been here, and scratched out such ravishing blind harmony, such tunes of a thousand years old, with names enough to choke you, as to have set all this learned body a dancing, and inspired them with due respect for my old bard his countryman whenever he shall appear. Mr. Parry, you must know, has set my ode in motion again and has brought it at last to a conclusion."
