EWIS, by the Grace of God, King of France and Navarre. To our Beloved and Faithful Counfellors, holding our Courts of Parliaments of Bourdeaux, Rouen and Rennes, Greeting. The late Henry the Great, our moft Honour'd Lord and Father, for continuing and increafing more and more the good Understanding and Friendship which was between him and our most Dear, and molt Beloved Brother, Coufin, and antient Ally, the King of Great Britain, and to procure the Benefit and Advantage of our Kingdoms; namely, in what concerns the Trade and Commerce of our common Subjects, treated with our faid Brother, the 26th of May 1606. Pope Gregory the XVth's Brief to the Prince of

Wales.

OST Noble Prince, Health and Light of the Divine Grace. Whereas Great Britain has always abounded with Virtues, and Perfons of Great Merit, and has fill'd both Worlds with the Glory of her Renown, fhe often draws the Thoughts of the Holy Apoftolical See to the Confideration of her Praifes. And indeed in the very Infancy of the Church, the King of Kings was pleas'd to make choice of her for his Inheritance, and that fo affectionately, that it is believ'd, the Roman Eagles had not arriv'd there before the Standard of the Crofs. Not to add, That feveral of her Kings, inftructed in the true Knowledg of Salvation, prefer'd the Crofs to the Royal Scepter, and the Difcipline of Religion to the Pleafures of the World, fetting Examples of Piety to foreign Nations, and the Ages to come. So that having merited in Heaven the Principalities and Preeminences of Beatitude, they have obtain❜d on Earth the triumphal Ornaments of true Holiness. And altho the State of the Church of England be alter'd at this Day, yet we fee the Court of Great Britain adorn'd and fortify'd with moral Virtues, which might comfort the Charity which we have for it, and be an Ornament to the Chriftian Name, if it could withal have for its Defence and Protection the Orthodox and Univerfal Truth.

Wherefore

Wherefore in fo much as we are delighted with the Glory of your moft Serene Father, and the Sense of your Royal Difpofition, we defire with fo much the more Earneftnefs, that the Gates of the Kingdom of Heaven may be open'd to you, and that you may gain the Love of the Univerfal Church. Moreover, it being certain, that Gregory the Great of moft Holy Memory, introduc'd to the People of England, and taught their Kings the Evangelical Law, and the Respect due to the Apoftolical Authority; we as inferior to him in Sanctity and Virtue, but equal in Name, Degree and Dignity, it is most reasonable, that, in following his Holy Footfteps, we fhould procure the Salvation of thofe Provinces, efpecially at this day, when your happy Design, most Noble Prince, raifes you to the Hopes of an extraordinary Felicity. Wherefore, as you are gone to Spain to fee the Catholick King in Perfon, with a Defire of being ally'd to the Houfe of Auftria, we have willingly prais'd your Defign, and even teftify'd openly with relation to the prefent Affair, that you are the Perfon chiefly regarded by our Prelacy: For feeing that you defire to take in Marriage a Daughter of Spain, we may from thence eafily conjecture, That thofe antient Seeds of Chriftian Piety, which have fo happily fprung up in the Hearts of the Kings of Great Britain, may (God giving them Growth) grow green again in your Soul. And indeed it would be incredible, that one fhould love fuch an Alliance, who hated the Catholick Religion, and delighted to opprefs the Holy See. We have in confequence hereof commanded moft humble Prayers to be continually made to the Father of Lights, that it may pleafe him to put you as a beautiful Flower of Christianity, and the only Hope of Great Britain, in poffeffion of that moft noble Inheritance, which your Ancestors have acquir'd for you, to defend the Authority of the Sovereign Pontiff, and fight against the Monsters of Herefy. Remember the Days of Old, enquire of your Fathers, and they will tell you the Way that leads to Heaven, and the Road which Temporal Princes walk'd in, in order to arrive at the Eternal Kingdom. See the Gates of Heaven open'd, and those moft Holy Kings of England, who, leaving England, were accompany'd with Angels in their way to Rome, and

came

came to honour, and do Homage to the Lord of Lords, and to the Prince of the Apoftles in the Apoftolical Chair. Their Works, and their Examples are fo many Voices of God fpeaking and exhorting you to imitate the Life and Example of thofe, to whofe Empire you will one day come. Is it poffible you fhould bear the Hereticks condemning and efteeming thofe to be wicked, whom the Faith of the Catholick Church teftifies are reigning with Jefus Chrift in Heaven, and have Command and Authority over all the Principalities and Empires of the Earth? See them ftretching out the Hand of this happy Country, to conduct you safe and found to the Court of the Catholick King, and who defire to bring you again into the Bofom of the Romish Church; which, with unutterable Groanings, fupplicating the God of all Mercy for your Salvation, ftretches out the Arms of Apoftolical Charity to embrace you with all Christian Affection, You who are her defir'd Son, in fhewing you the most Bleffed Hope of the Kingdom of Heaven. In truth you cannot give greater Confolation to all Chriftian People, than to put in poffeffion of your moft Noble Ifle the Prince of the Apoftles, whofe Anthority has been held fo long in your Kingdom of Great Britain, for the Defence of Kingdoms, and the Oracle of the Deity; which will eafily come to pafs, if you open your Heart to the Lord who knocks, whereon depends all the Happiness of that Kingdom. It is from that fo great Charity that we favour the Praifes of the Royal Name, and which makes us defire that you and your moft ferene Father may be qualify'd with the Name of Deliverers and Reftorers of the antient and paternal Religion of Great Britain, which we hope for, trusting in the Goodness of God, in whofe Hands are the Hearts of Kings, and who makes the People of the Earth receive Healing, whom we fhall endeavour always with all our power to render propitious and favourable to you. In the mean time be fenfible of the Care of our Charity in this Letter, which is only bent upon procuring your Happiness: nor fhall we ever repent the writing thereof, if the_reading of it but kindles fome little Spark of the Catholick Faith in the Heart of fo great a Prince, who we defire may be fill'd with Gladness of a long Duration, and Hourifh with the
