396 RENWICK (Dr. W. H.) Medical Practitioner at Canterbury, Formerly Pupil of Sir Astley Cooper. A.L.S. to Sir Astley Cooper. 3 pp., 4to. Canterbury, 24th March, 1836.

15S

An intensely interesting letter on the subject of the Apprenticeship of medical students, in the course of which he speaks against the combination of the sale of drugs with practice.

[ocr errors]

The term of apprenticeship is far too long and incurs great waste of time. I propose in lieu that the period a youth should be placed with a General Practitioner (not a fellow who combines the sale of Drugs with practice, for such a man ought the instant he does so, be struck out of the professional pale), for two or at most three years.' Etc.

A long and very valuable letter on Art matters, and having to do with his process of aquatinting, the method of which he says he is unable to disclose, "being sworn to secrecy," he however at the same time goes on to reveal part of the process.

"I quite envy you the Virtuosa room and hope to have the pleasure of a feast in it fit for an Artist, in the course of next Summer, if the word of the Duke of Argyle and my friend, Col. A. Campbell, may be rely'd on. If I should be so happy to bend my course to the North I will lay close sieze to Edinbr. unless you will save me the trouble by letting me have some of your sketches, which I woud execute in Aquatinta, I dare not disclose you any part of my method being sworn to secrecy, but I will venture to acquaint you so far, they are done on copper with aquafortis, the mixt metal will I know produce very fine tints with Aquafortis such as common brass or Bell metal. Iron you may operate upon with a hair pencil, after the outline is etch'd, with great ease, thus far my Dear Friend I venture to communicate to you (tho' it is not the method I now use and dare not disclose to anybody). I can assure you fine effects may be produced by these ways. You may also make the most agreeable outline in the following way, after the ground is lay'd on the copper and before you smoke the plate with a candle put the dabber into the Tallow, and dab the Etching ground well all over while the plate is hot Draw your design or view with a black lead pencil, which will press thro' the ground and lay the outline bare to the copper, which you may bite in with Aquafortis this is a most enchanting method it saves all the trouble of Etching with

a needle." Etc., etc.
